A PECULIAR ease is reported from Swatow. Capt. Bathurst, of the popular Douglas steamer Thales, was sued before Mr. Wilkinson, British Consul at Swatow, damages caused by the run- ning down of a small junk on a certain night lately. The evidence of the officers and others who were on watch on board the steamer at the time stated, was very definite to the effect that no Junk was ever near the steamer, evidence of the junk people was to the effect that some steamer had sunke their craft, and the Thaler was believed to have been the only steamship in the neighbourhood at that time, Jadgment for plaintiffs for $800 with costs. As the defendant is canying the case before the Supreme Court at the Beltish Consulate, Shang- kal, we must not publish our opinions at present but we shall certainly keep them ready to fire off as soon as possible.

THE following is taken from what is supposed to be the diary of a distinguished Hongkong resident, found at Kowloon lately:-
