scythe. Most of the crop, however, was already barrested; and on threshing foors we saw men | beating out the grain on wooden frames shaped komewhat like bedstead. The sesamum was "being gathered in too, and stood in endicas dry brown sheaves against the barn walls. As a rule, only women and girls were left behind at the farmhoutes. As we approached, the younger ones, after a good sture, would scamper away; while the o'd dames, wrinkled and hideous, stood their ground, stenlly imper. torbable. Their attitude was invariably the same, as if suddenly troken in the act of lifting the pipe to the half-opened lips.
I think the most agreeable and unexpected fenture of our trip was, that not a single dog took the slightest notice of ut. There was no scarcity of the brutes, but the few that were stirring seemed only hall awake; the rest lay colled up. doring in the warm air, worn out, I suppose,
long night's barking, A Chinese dog always selects the middle of the road for his bed, and slumbers there tranquilly. You may see long
cavalcades, man and beast alike ploking their way to one side; he would not budge for the Emperor..

The British submarino surveyors have recently. found. a practicable route for a cable between Japan and the British Canadian provinces on the Pacific Coast of North America, thus pre paring the way for direct telegraphic communica- tion between this continent and the Asialle con- tirent. The Japanese-Canadian cable will follow in the wake of the new Japanese-Canadian Hoe of steamships.

Looking at the lines from Europa to Adla, to Africa, to Australia, to South America and to North America, we cannot help seeing how largely they are British in their origin and in their ownership. 1 is the British who are the chie cable-layer of the world.
It was ab American who, more than a quarter of a century ago, laid the first cable across the Atlantic Ocean. We have not done our proper share of the business of cable-laying stace that time. About half-way, we came upon a ruinous red building, of sinister and sepulchral aspect, that stood in a lonely hollow place encompassed by stunted bamboos and ridges of graveyard ground. From this den there come forth two things in buman shape gaunt as greybounds, swarthy ag Mears, with 7gs of incredible filthiness clinging about them, brass circlets round their foreheads, and matted elflocke falling over their shoulders. As they stood glaring chus with eyes like live coals, there was something so ghoul-like and diabolical in their appearance that I confess I ahuddered. Presently we became aware, to westward, of a thick Ine of masts, rising apparently out of the solid earth, and leading up to a grey tower: the Grand Canal, and the South Gate pagoda of Yangchow. Drawing nearer, we could perceive s mad-wall barracke built around the base of the pagada. A file of soldiers, with long bayonets over their shoulders, was issuing clywards, and made a bright streak of colour on the grass. A Hittle past, the pagoda we climbed a bank and had before us the populous conal and the city walls beroad. Some distance ahead, Among the crowded masts was the red flag of a houseboat, which had been sent on the night before. We hailed it with joy, for it was past eleven o'clock; we had come fifteen miles and more on a cup of coffee; and famine was gnaw» ing at our entrrils. Tifin was soon ready and the first rage of bunger and thirst appeased, we fell to discussing our plans for the day,
