ROME, January stat. Aterrible battle'between 600 peasants and a body of gendarmes occurred at Termint, a seaport town of Slelly, to-day, and eight peasants were killed and twenty severely wounded. The fight was caused by a refusal of the pensants to vacate a tract of land claimed by the commune. The peasants had squstted on this, and when a formal notice was served upon them to vacate they paid no attention to it. Upon learning that the peasants had refused the gendarmes were sent to eject them. The peasants resisted and a fierce struggle ensued with the above results. A sumber of prisoners were taken and others fled, sweating vengeance.

LONDON, January sand. Alexander Del Mar, former director of the Bureau of Statistics at Washington and well known on the Pacific coast as a molning engineer, publishes a long and elaborately worked-out suggestion for a tresty between Great Britain and the United States for the purpose of rehabilitating allver and restoring Indian exchange. It attracts a grod deal of attention and It has already strengthened silver securities here. An outline of his plan is that the two coun- tries agree to purchase all sliver offered, be- ginning at 38 pence per standard ounce and raising the price one-eighth of a penny monthly, each country paylog for the same tu gold bonds bearing slow rate of interest. The silver thus bought is to be sold to the purchaser for gold at rope-half pence per cunce above the purchasing | pilce current during the month, the two countries settling once a quarter, having payments and sbarleg profits.
His idea is that the saving on Indian exchange and the American allver product would pay the highest possible interest charge several times arer, while the plan would not disturb the gold basis of either country. The treaty would be for Siteen years, and the rising scale would terminate at a maximum of 58fd, which is the
sixteen to one " ratio.
The scheme is practically a suggestion that England and America corner the liver of the world and make the operation pay for itself as it goes along. As has been said, it has greatly Interested fiosocial circles here and le meeting
