In pulling ; and so, rigging up the little bit of canwar they kad, a small wil was set and practically they let the boat drift to the seathword and westward, At daylight the next morning, one of the men called out "Land Oh and the good news #proved to be true. They then set to with the cars and, by noon, on the 25th January, ikey reached the Dutch Island of Lingge Rhia. They landed and a pative canoe
met them and took their boat to another polat around the Island, where there was a village. Here, they were kindly, and hospitably treated by the natives who give them rice and some sugar cane, after eating which the unfortunates lay down and slept. After sleeping for an hour or so, they were taken on to a place which they say is called Tello, where they met a Turk who could sneak English, and by whom they were taken to the headman of the village. This man gave them food and some native clothing, for, in the latter verpect, they were very badly off Here they remained two days when they were taker on in a place called Dysh, from whence they were sent on to a Mr. Smit who is flving there in a house belonging to the Sultan of the place; Mr. Smith kept them there for a week, and treated them most hospitably, setting them up in clothes. Before they left this place, the Sultan gave orders that they were to be brought to Singapore to his steamer, the Allan. They were treated very kindly by the Dutch Realdent at Rhle who, when they were on the ship, sent them down some comforts in the shape of little delicacies and some tobacco. The Sultan of Lingga gave each man two dollars, some bis cufta, and some batter. The second mate who was suffering from expure was treated by the hospital decor, and all of them received every postible kind treatment, of which the man speak highly. They arrived at Singapore on Saturday evening, and were at once sent to the Sallore Home, except the second mate who is now in inspital.

Every one of the poor unfortunatei were dressed In cotton-wadded jackets and trousers, which under ordinary winier westher would have been quite comfortable and sufficient to keep out the cold, The thermometer on that particular morning registered twenty degrees below freez- ing point.

A number of rustics living in the neighbour. head of Tientsin, having occasion to carry a quantity of Kaoliang stålki, used for fuel, to Tientsin to sell, were prevented from crassing the river the other day owing to a terrific and blinding sand storm that suddenly arose. As there was no shelter within reach, the poor fellows huddled in groups of three and four bebind the loads to escape the cold and biting wind which they at first thought would be of short duration; but in this they were disap pointed as the storm continued throughout the afternoon and night, and when they attempted at last to reck for shelter in some villages a couple of miles off, they found themselves so benumbed that to move about in the binding sandstorm was an impossibility, When passers- by came along the next morning the majority of the unfortuale men were found frozen to death by their loads, and those that were still living bad barely any life left in them. Nearly thirty men lost their lives in this way.

On the 25th fastant, market day, when tens of thousands are wont to congregate at this city for the usual traffic of an sausually large fair, a small hank suspended payment and created such a panic that a "ran" on all the banks was the inevitable result. A fancial panic in Welhien is especially hazar deur, owing to the wide circulation of Wellen bank notes, within's radius of see from the city. For a Chinese city this is an unusual circulatios, and is dee not so much to greater confidence in our local banks, a demand, on the part of the rural population, for convenient currency with which to carry on their petty traffic at the Weiblen market is due to several causes, among which market.
