AN OLD SPORTSMAN. Hongkong, 4th February, 1891.

THE DOMESTIC LIFE OF A CHINESE GENTLEMAN.

In the Flowery Kingdom the family is the social unit rather than the Individua). As n. consequence the home assumes, much greater prominence than in the Western civilisations. The glided youth of our great American cities who live in clubs and have no fireside of their own, have no parallel in Chins. Such a person would be completely ostracized in the Far East. Every Chinese gentleman has a home and bestows upon it all the time, thought and money can possibly afford, "Hii moda of living pre- sents many interesting features to the Western observer, Among these the more poticeable are its simplicity, economy and quietude. To belong to this class of gentlemen, the first requisite is a moderate amount of money, This ranges from $10,000 to $20,000 and averages about $12,000. Out of this the owner buys a fine dwelling-place. In the fashionable quarter of a Chinese city, this - costs from: $2,000 to $2,500, in a respectable dise trict from $1500 to $20co, and in a suburb of town from $1300 to $1800. The bigh rents and enormous real estate values of Christendom are unknown to the celestials. Here is a simple land-system, which combines the slagle tax Theory of Henry. George with the communal ownership of the Russian villages, prevents all speculation in land, and avoids the formation of an "unearned increment,"
