At Shanghal, on the 12th January, 1893, CHARLES COLE, aged 37 years.
IS THERE is no mystery whatever, as suggested by a writer in our morning contemporary, with reference to the sad death at Saigon the other day of Victor Valacic, the aeronaut. Valezlo lost his life in consequence of his own foolhardiness. It is a practies with all experienced aeronauts to secure themselves to the parachute with life lines, so as to prevent all risk of not being able to hold on by the rope or trapets but Valazie had such confidence in his powerful physique and well trained muscles that ha usually dispensed with these safeguards. In Saigon when the parachute was detached from the balloon it fell (as usual) some five hundred feet before opening out, and it was no doubt the jerk caused by・its. sudden expanules that forced the unfortunate balloonist to lose his hold. Had Valarie taken the ordinary preeste tious he would have reached terra firma salo enough, and in our opinion the authorities in all countries where there - balloon ascents and parachute descents take place shasid insist on the danger to the aeronaut belag reduced to a minimum by the use of lile lines being made compulsory.
