BERLIN, December 7th. In the Ahlwardt case the counsel for Ahiwardt raired an objection to some porilons of the evidence, which was not allowed. He thereupon withdrew from the court and the Judge entered a fite against him for improper conduct. This caused great excitement, and the evidence was declared closed. The Judge's arbitrary ruling makes Ahlward, who was hitherto considered a second Jack Cade, a mariye.

It is learned that Mrs. Maybrick, the American woman confined in the Woking Prison on the charge of murdering her husband, was critically' ill on Thursday. It was thought she was dying and the last sacrament was administered. She ronde the last confession of a dying prisoner and declared she was innocent of any moral intent or deed and set against the life of James Maybrick. She has had several 'hemorrhages of the lungs, which left her so weak that if they occur again she will probably de. She has been suffering from hemorrhages for six weeks. She has petitioned the Home 5 cretary to release her from prison before the disease becomes incurable. The Home Secretary said this afternoon that the case of Mrs. May brick was receiving serious consideration.

LONDON, December 11th.

The British steamship Diliberg was wrecked off Long End, wear Harwich, last night. The life-savers were unable to board her outil day, break, when they found several sexmen drowned below deck. Others of the crew are missing, and it is supposed that they have perished.

Fourteen men were saved by a fishing back and landed at Ramsgate last night. The captain's dead body was also landed.

The Dilberg's mate, who was among the saved, says a fearful night was spent aboard the steamer after she went asbore. To the vessel's signals of distress no response seemed to be made. A particularly heavy wave soddenly broke over the vessel at midnight, flooding the forecastle and washing seven of the crew over- board. One of the men was afterward washed back and was rescued uninjured. The other sis were drowned,

The remainder of the crow were then comi- pelled to take to the rigging, the boats having been destroyed with the exception of the life boat, which had a hole in its bottom. In the rigging the survivors spent a fearful night, the cipiain becoming paralyred and Insate from exposure.

The side receded at drybreak and the men then took to the lifeboat, having patched the hole in the bottom with a piece of tin. They reached Kentish Knock lighthouse at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, The captain dled on the journey.

It is reported that a schooner was wrecked on the sands in the vicinity and that her crew is missing.

A perfect epidemic of trouble, about precious stones seems to have set in. The last case should furnish revelations na sensational as any of those previously before the public.

The facts, so far as they have leaked out, are there; A certain nobleman possessed a very valuable diamond and opal necklace. His wife was afraid to wear opals and refused to don the necklace. A bort time ago the peer showed the ornament to a young lady who is engaged to be married. On her admiring it be laughingly said she might have it. Thanking him, she bore the precious article in triumph to her room.

The next morning the peer asked for the return of the jewel, and on the lady replying that he had given it to her his lordship declared that he had merely spoken in jest. The Indy refuses to give up the necklace and still retains it.

In our last we referred to the origin" and development of the Mitsu-Bisht and Nippon Yogen Kalsha fleets since 1874, but the develop. ment of the Japanese navy has been very remarkable alan. One of their early warships was the old Confederate (British-built) cruiser Stonrenil, which some of us remember, and which the Jaw acquired in time to use during their Civil War of 1868. It is noteworthy, how. every that the first fronclad they ordered to be built was constructed by Messrs. Hall & Co., of Aberdeen, who built the first of the China tex. clippers.

A year or two later the Prince of Satsuma also acquired the sister-ship Scotland, which remained in his employment for many years. It is said that the Japanese made new bollers entirely of copper for this shin within twelve months after she came into their posscasion, and although the first of the kind they had ever seen at close quarters.

Both the England and the Scotland belonged to that fleet of auxillary, steamers which the late firm of W. S. Lindiay & Co. had constructed with a view to revolutionising the Eastern trade, but with the result which has been related in a previous article.
