The law gaoin the engine-driver who, through mere negligence and with no -nicat, smashes up a train-load of passenger cancels the | certificate of the captain who steers his ship on the rocks in the same fashion but it makes no provision for anything happening to the director who runs a bank to destruction by sheer laziness, faaftention, ignorance, and a boundless capacity for being taken in. And why this is, no one has yet attempted to explain. Sydney Bulletin.

net few where even experienced shipmasters have been remist in their duty in this respect, There are comparatively recent cases where ship-masters, when in close proximity to an obscured and dangerous coast, have failed to take soundings. This is the grossest kind of carelessness. Why a shipmaster should be averse to taking soundings in order to verify his reckoning, particularly where the circumstances call for the exercise of more than ordinary carefulness, is most unaccountable. To be as certain as possible of the position of the vessel; Hengine nişan
Vicunts Peak to use every means at hand with this end in view,
Cap Reattata ma is the first duty of every shipmaster. The
じゅも neglect to take soundings is only one of several Ma kinds of carelessness in navigation, Prominent among others is the running of steamers at high speed in times of fog, and not keening a proper lookout. The former is a proceeding about which there is some debate. That it is dangerous cannot be doubted, but whether the danger is lessened by getting through ibe fog zooner, or by lessen- ing the chances of danger to one vessel, is at least open to question. Where one is a small vessel and the other ́n "record breaker" the chances would be all one way. Where two fast steamers of about equal size driving through the fog at high speed collide, the chances of both getting badly hart would be about, equal. Tala practica is likely to prove a fruitful cause of casualties if some heck is not put upon it. Steamers are now employed so very generally in all trades that the matter of running at high speed in thick and foggy weather amounts to adding a very great and decided perll to ocean navigation, Careless navigation may be sald properly to be no navigation, Neglect of the the same purport or effect as the llbe! for which | necessary means to lasure safety in "the work of such action has been brought.
