An extraordinary general meeting of the day Oct, '1gth at the Cannon-street Hotel, London, for the purpose of declaring an interim dividend for the half-year ending June 30th fast, Mr. William Paterson occupied the chair..

Mr. Thomas Forrest (the' manager) having read the notice calling the meeting,

from Foochow to London round the Cape in 58 days and 9 hours. When the Suez Canal was opened, Mr. Holt's steamers the fleet being by that time greatly increased-ceased the Cape voyage, and was altered. Steamship Company, which, although it has often tendered for mail contracts, has never, so far as we know, received any Government sub aldy. The freights, in the early days of steam, ran at about sos. per ton to the coast-ports of

Chian, and from 751 to 85%, to the aperiver

posts--not bad rates for the owners, although a satelle compared, with what John Company used to earn without making any profit out of them.

The Chairman sald-Gentlemen, we meet for the special purpose of obtaining your sanction to the payment of a dividend, and knowing, as you well do, that the past ball-year has bad more than its f. Il complement of troubles, it is pleasing established in 1852, was to take up Chion as The design of the General Screw Company, for us to be able to say to you that, after pro well as the principal Indian ports, but th's Com viding for every bing, we are quits able to pay the same dividend as we have done for the pre- pany came to grief, partly through the unaufts- ceding ten years. (Applause.) You were told bility of their boats and partiycwing to financiad on former éccasions that our funds were prac

When tbla' concern, wak wound up their steamers-Indiana, Golden tally in gold, and, as there have recently been various questions on the subject, we think It, Lady Jocelyn, Queen of the South, right to tell you again that we are continning that Jaron, Hydasper and Calcutta were trans- policy, and that there is liale probability of our

ferred to the European and American Steam departing hom it while there is so much Navigation Company, which also had to be

wound up. The boats then passed into th uncertainty with regard to this vexed silver question. I need scarcely say that the Eastern wonderful financial network constructed round trade was never in a more unsatisfactory state

the firm of Overend, Gurney & Co., and after than it is now, and that the ordinary analettes belog employed for a time between England and of Angle-Indian banks are also lacreasingly Brazil under the name of the Anglo-Luso Steam aggravated by the great shrinkage in value of Navigation Company, they were turned late the East India and London S'eamship Company, their currencies in relation to gold. But we may venture to hope that some amellors which figured among Overend's debtors at the tion of that trouble will result from the Interna-

I notice that some shareholders are laughing, but I kepo te may be able to do by-and-by, (Hear, hear.) The resolution that I have now jo propese li, That an Interim dividend for the half-year ended 30th June last, at the rate of 7 per cent. per annum, free of income-tax, be now declared, payable on and after the 26th inst." (Applause) Mr. Emile Levita: I have much pleasure in seconding that resolution.

Dr. Diydale said the chairman spoke about "the currency, but not being city man he thought he was entitled to ask upon what grounds there was always' so much slárm about the question of the currency in Hindestan. It seemed to him there could be no danger in banking in India on that account, because be supposed the back would receive and pay away in the same coinage. He should be very much obliged to be told, as one of the external public, whether there was any real cause for anxiety in the East on accoust of the currency,

The Chairman: We, of course, are constantly working with silver in Indie, but have to keep gold always in view, for gold is the money we must eventually took to. We make phofits both In silver and gold; we have, na you probably know, considerable gold securities in London, while we have a very large amount of current „accounts, and therefore we are not alwaya work- ing with our own money in the East, but with that of our customers. We have, however, con- stantly to keep in view that London. In our centre end that gold is our substance; if we keep within defined limits there need be no danger, (Applause.)

A Shareholder inquired if the reserve fand remained intact, or was the present dividend in any way dependent on the reserve food.

Previous to the establishment of H»kh Ha¢, there was much discussion and difference el. opinion about the character of vessels required to steam round the Cape to the Far East. It is no wonder that both the General Screw and the Australian Royal Mail, and the Furopean and Australing, and other concerns, proved failures, because they were dealing with unknowa forces Gities the belief was very generally entertained and untested problems. Thus in the early among practical shipowners that steath round the Cape would never pay for the China and Australian trades-seeing that during the monsoons a sailing-ship could make during large portion of her royage qule as good a daily run as an ordinary-powered steamer, "wälle high- powered steamers would require to carry o much coal as to leave not enough room for An Overwhelming Organization that will live in THE TABLE D'HOTE, at separate tables, is supplied with every delicacy, the cefsins being freight-paying cargo,

Then came the idea of combining steam with sailing quilles-an idea which the Messrs. Rickmers, of Bremen, have lately carried out in a modified form in their new class of rice ships.

After the failure of the General Screw Com pany the firm of W. S. Landsay & Co. (Dow represented by Galbraith, Pembroke & Co.), offered to convey Indian mails from London

round the Cape to Mauritius, Ceylon, and Calcutta (with the Intention of adding Chios Ister on), by means of what were called fuelllary steamers. Some six or seven vessels were built, of fron, and full ship-rigged with a large spitend of canvas.” They ranged in size from about 800 3,500-tons, each, and were of very handsome models ; and they were each fitted with avellary engines, of from fo to 120 horse-power, to drive them through the "doldrums," and on entering | harbours, etc.

With these vessels a new experiment was made and was 'persevered in for a year or two. Ex- perience, however, showed that while they could make to or 11 knots under canvas with a favours fundable wind, they could not make more than 6 or

Aberdeen builders showed the way, but Greenock bullders, as we have seen, improved upon the Aberdeen designs. Then, again, the Wear turned out some famous racers.
