Why, at the present price of silver the Bank of France stands to lose about £18,000,000 on his holdings of silver coin, and this would swallow up the capital and the whole of the reserves of over £9,000,000. This, no doubt, is the reason that that institution conti unes to accumuiste gold, and has at the present timb about 64,385,000 worth of that metal its vaults. As Great Britain alone amongst the great Powers is mono-metallic, and is thus unlafdenced by the value of silver, it would be suleidal for her to adopt a bi-metallic currency.
