M. C. F. Gilt prosecuted on behalf of the bank, and stated that the prisoners carried on business as Beyts, Craig, and Company, at steamship owners and lading agents of 31, Great St. Helen's and Botabay. The Bombay office was represented by the son of the elder partner. They were charged with forging bills of lading for very large amounts, and he (Mr. Gul thought this would turn out to be a most extensive commercial swindle. The prisoners had had business with the Chartered Mercantile Bank, and every confidence was placed in them. In the usust course of business bills of lading A MEETING will be held at the Rocus, were produced and money was obtained on them, When it was discovered that the ship Santor had arrived at Antwerp, the dendants should have taken up these bills; instead of delog se, they asked that they might be held ever for a day

• two, as they had suffered by the stoppage of the Oriental Bank. This appeared a reasonable request, but they were informed by the managing director that the goods having arrived, they must, for their own protection, insure the goods agafast fire. The defendants asked that no steps should be taken until they had seen him on the subject. Inquiries were then made, and was discovered that the bills were forgeries, and that there were no goods such as represented la the bills of lading,

on

which the money had been advanced. The manager of the Chartered Mercantile Bank then called on the defendants, and having mentioned what had come to bis knowledge, defendants then virtually acknowledged the facts.
