New that $616,000 (in -silver) have been actually embargoed and, kept idles and that in execution of a further embargo up to about $1,000,000, the Bank's Strong Room at Manila, which their Managers have officially stated to the Government contained 3000,000 (Thies million dollar) in silver bellion and securities, had been closed and sealed up by the Court, mearly 10 months since and still remains so, it is sight that the Shareholders of the Back should consider whether the extravagant and large sum to be taken from them, for the purpose of keeping the itigation alive, and jeopardising their credit and business, is worth the expenditure.
We Have already noted that the sald twa embargoes have taken place after the Bank followed the adviced of their clever Lawyer, Mr. Godiner.
The conduct of the said Mr. Godines does (not astonish anyone aquainted with him.
He has already been publicly accused, and justly so, of secretly acting for both parties in an action connected with this very same liigation.
It is hardly needful to say this action speaks for itself and explains the enlightened self Interest displayed in the honourable advice given.
With regard to the acceptance of Godiner's advice, it is important to notice that the Attorney-General for England, Sir Richard' Webster, Q.C., M.P., the Solicitor-General, Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C., M.P., and Mr. Emmanuel M. Underdown, C, bare advised, and are of opinion, that the Directors acted ultra vires" by opening their branch in Manlia.
It is quite likely that those responsible for epening such branch bare, in adopting the Course advised by Mr. Godinez, been endeavour. tog
to swold their personal liability for losses, which the Shareholders might object to bear.
Perhaps the prerent Directors are unaware of these ominous circumstances; and it will be only just, on their part, to ascertain the truth of all these statements, which Mesa, Jurado & Co. are willing and prepared to substantiate, either to the said Directors, or to an independent Committee of shareholders, appointed for such a

both purpose. Anyhow, it will show their honesty and sincerity, by endeavouring to ascertain by whom, and for what purpose, the false statements lately published by the press, were invented and circulated, and if there is any connection between their publication and the
fluctuation of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation's Shares
And this duty is so imperative, that the "Sten dard" in fin issue of the 29th alto, already throws some light on the manner in which news connected with the Bank is circulated in Lon: dan. The remarks, which are also well worthy of the considers :ion of the Shareholders, are follows
"It seems that the officials have received a "telegram from Hongkong thle morning; informing them that the Compradore of the Office there had dianppeared, taking $500,000 "of the Bank's cash with him. All fast week "the Shaies were being thrown on the London "market from China, so that it would seem "some people knew in Hongkong a week ago

The long expected review of the Chinklang, troops took place last Tuesday. For over, a month the soldiers have been drilling both morn ing and siternoon, and not a little has been the amount of powder burned up. But now the "big day is over, and the silence that reigns seems almost apmessive at times. The Tu Tien Hut will take pisce in a few weeks however, and then all for a few days will again be nolie, bastle and possibly riot.

As to the shooting with the foreign Cmuskets, at a distance of 100 paces not a shot missed the mark, so 'It said. The archery was not quite so good, as one little child, who received a stray arrow in his cheek, can bear testimony.
Az 1000 as the review was over the Viceroy embarked for Soechow, going down the Grand Canal, his boats being towed by five steam-legs. That not all the high Chinese officials are above believing in the efficiency ofideis is shown. by a proclamation recently issued by our local magistrate at the request of the Provincial com mander-in-chief, Fung, of Kuangtung. It appears that this official was in command at Chinklang in the early part of the Taiping rebellion. He was in great straits at one time, and his troops, without food or pay. Being at his wits end he went to the Chao Ying Sali, a temple on the bill about five west of Chinking, and worshipping therein he was immediately de- livered. He says he has frequently since received great help from prayers offered to this god even in his distant home. Last year he learned with great sorrow that the temple was now in ruins, and the god a homeless wanderer, He has therefore sent some one to superintend the rebuilding of the temple, and he has begged this preclamation of the magistrate that the put no hindrance in the way of the work,

About ten daya ako a servant girl twelve or fourteen years of age was murdered by some member of this houre hold. There is no evidence at my command to show who did the deed or why it was done, but it is plain that there was foul play, for an attempt was made to get rid of the corpse. It was taken to the house of a neighbour and laid down by the bearer either within or in front of the door, with the remark, "Here is a bundle that I wish to leave with you."
