THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, MAY 7, 1892.
ARRIVAL OF THE REGIMENT.
The new Hongkong Regiment of Indians landed from the P. & O.S. N. Co.'s steamship Bombay, Capt. S. Bason, at the Kowloon Wharf this morning and marched to their temperary quarters under canvas, the Band of the Shrop ahire Light Infantry playing them into camp...
Their appearance created quite a flutter of excitement in Kowloon, and numerous Indian viellore from Hongkong came over to welcome their brethren in arms. At about half past 8 o'clock two companies of the Regiment were paraded and told off to keep the road from the wharf to the camp, and about ro.30 the main body, marched in and were immediately sen to qarters.
A foer body of men than these defenders of Hongkong it would be impossible to imagine. Although enrolled only a short time, they are of the class of whom it may accurately be said that a soldierly bearing is natural to them; and so- far as martial appearance is concerned the drill sergeants' task will be as easy one.
The Regiment wears the brown khakes uni-
form, which is universally adopted in India for a?! branches of the Service when on the march, and Ithough a disappointment to the spectator who sees it for the first time, there can be no doubt as to its utility, A small yellow Pathan cap, with an ample puggaren, farms a picturesque head-dress, and the loose j ckel and trousers give free play to the lithe limbs and graceful carriage of these grand looking soldiers. Those of our readers who may be unacquainted with the capabilities FOURTEEN days hard labour was the prescrip of these Indian Highlanders on the field of tion Awarded to an elegant "boy," in the Police battle, have only to pay a visit to the Kowloon Court this morning, who mistook a couple of his campito become imbued with the belief that master's (Mr. Christopher Keep) pocket hand-blow for a blow, and that a ready one, is the kerchicis for bis very own. THE result of the Executive Council enquity into the case against the ten Penang Chinese, charged with being boidmen of a dangerous secret society, was, says the Pinang Gazelle, that six of the prisoners have been ordered to be banished from the Colony, and one was brought back to Penang to be tried for a murder recently committed. The rest were discharged. TO THE ENTOR or the “Homokong Tresorash?
with the Dairy Farm Co, unfortunately so sadly DEAR SIR,-The connection of Mr. Ladds misunderstood, being again referred to by "AD Old Colonist" in your issue of yesterday, calls for a few words of explanation,
*
Mr. Ladds as consulting veterinary surgeon to the Company has only one well-defined duty to perform, that of advising professionally to the administering of medicines to dumb animals. How this can interfere with his official duties, I fail to understand. The Government Veterinary Surgeon, upon being to take consulted, is supplied with information that in some way must assist him officially so far as regards the state of health of the Campany's stock.
modealy aside, the Dairy Farm as now conducied, with its system of Sanitary police as early perfect as can be made to apply locally, does for its own protection and Interest a great deal more than the Government would require sulting Mr. Ladds, who is the only professional under ordinary circumstances; so heyond con
gentleman in this colony, upon Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, the Company can bave no further use for him.
Thanking you for the favor of inserting the above,
