AUSTIN ARMS HOTEL AND

LAND CO.

The ordinary general meeting of shareholders in this Company was held today. Mr. J. D. Humphreys presided and there were also present Mesura, J. M. E. Machado, A. }. May, G. R. Stevens, E. Mancell, H. Humphreys, A. P.

· Nobbs, F. A. Brockelmann, H. Saiton, and Capt. Clement,

The Chairman, after the notice of meeting was read, sald: Gentlemen; with your, permission, the repert and statement of accounts, having been in your hands for some daya, may be taken as read. Before proceeding to propose their adoption by you, I am prepared to answer Any questions arising thereon, and I will reserve any remarks 1 have to make until afterwards.

There being no questions, the Chairman moved the adoption of the report and accounts, Chpi. Clement seconded the motion, which was carried.

'On the motion' of Mr. Brockelmann, seconded by Mr. May, Messtt. Stevens, J. D. Humphreys, H. Humphreys, and J. Orango were re-elected. directors.

On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. S'aven, Messrs. Henderson and Hawking were re-elec'ed auditors.

This concluded the business of the ordinary meeting.

An extraordinary meeting was then held to consider a resolution having for its purpose to. wrlic off half the capital of the Company.

In proposing the motion, of which notice had

been given, the Chairman said-Gentlemen, in proposing the resolution referred to to the notice which has just been read, and lo sking you to it, it is only natural that you should expect Pass from me some explanation of the course which your directors have pursued, in the male of the Mountain View property, the lost upon which has rendered this resolution advisable. · To make everything quite clear I will begin at the commercement, namely the promotion of the Company. We have not the slightest wish to avoid any responsibility for any act of our own, but we bave no wish for you or the public to sup pose that we are responsible for the initial step which has Irfleted this great loss upon the Company. None of your present directors were promoters of the Company. The prometer were Mr. F. C. L., Rauter and Mr. Brodie, who purchased the Austin Arms hotel alie and sold It to the Company at a fair price. The Grat Board comprised Mesir, Findlay Smith, Dorabjee Nowrojee, Reuter, myself and another; Mr. Findlay Smith being solely responsible for my joining this venture and accepting a scat on the Board. Mr. Findlay Smith, after voting the purchaseofthe Mountain View property, a white elephant," retired from the Board, put his shares on the market, and then floated another company In opposition to this. Hut for that, this resolution would in all probablity never have been necessary. But now it is rendered advisable to take this step rather than that the hotel be dragged down by the weight of the incubus it has been to us. The money which the sale of this property brought in, we shall immediately get the beneft of, while on the other hand we should have had to put our bands in our pockets, and spend thousands of dollars to make the property sufficiently attractive for people te live in That would also have lost us the sea son for letting, because most people would have made their summer arrangements by the time Mountain View was finished. The directors, before deciding to sell it, had many long and Anxious consultations on the subject. We first considered the advisability of raising money on mortgage, so that if things did improve inter on, and houre property again increased to value. would still have had a chance in any Improved value on the property; but you would have had the weight of interest and you have already a very heavy that, all things consente in this respect, so

But it is more probable, in fact it is about certain, that the Textory will be put in charge of Mr. F. H. May, who will certainly be an improvement on Mr. Don't Remember Mitchell-Innes. Comr. Hastings will be acting Police Magistrate, and though he knows nothing of the law, neither do many others who have he'd similar or higher posts in this Colony; and he is a man of reliable intelligence which is really astonishing in a Government official, The Post Offic: goes to Mr. Northcote, a leave, and also better than the fanatics who better man than the one who has gone on ancer at the appointment in the columns of our contemporaries. Possibly Mr. Hastings will continue to be Harbour-Master's under- study. Mr. Rennie is all right where he , with plenty of pay and no work. He could do the Harbour business as well as many certainly a well as the gentur who conducted the Namehow Inquiry, without inquiring; but he is saying in the P. W. D. for the present. Several other changes are being made, and his Excellency the Governor can be relied on to make much better choice than elther Granny or "Brownte" tried to make for him.]

It is further stated that there has been serious loss suffered by the Sikh police guard there. the rumour puiting it at some exaggerated figure,

On the face of it there might be a certain amount of truth in the rumour, how ever far it may be exaggerated. . For it is to be remem bered that Teme leh is the key to the Semantan river district, and if S Rahman is to show himself worth surthing more than a mere Jungle fugitive he would take any chance that offered of surprising any post held by Government police, and naturally by pre ference he would seek to have try at the surprise of Temerloh. Nothing is yet known as to who was in charge at Temerloh, but perhapa Mr. Sumner may have been there.

Mr. Rodger is probably with the Sultan. No intelligence has, however, come from any really authentic source as yet, and it will therefore be necessary to suspend opinion until direct news that can be relied on comes down from Pahang, Mr. R. W. Duff, who has been appointed Acting Superintendent of Police in Pahang appeared to be going up on the 23rd to Kwala Pabang in the steamship Horsburgh. This vessel will therefore as her retam be able to bring back direct letters from Mr. Rodger giving accurate Information of what really has taken place at Temerloh. We shall have to walt til then to ascertain, bow much truth the native rumours contain,

PROGRESS OF SCIENCE,

Wheat and water contalu all the elements necessary for men, and for the hard-working man, too. Where is the man that can exist on our present white bread and water? There is an old joke about doctors being in league with undertakers it would rather appear as if the millers and backers were in the doctors' pay, a if were it not for them and for the white bread they are so serious in producing, the doctors would have less to do. Separating the bran from the floor became fashionable at the beginning of the present century. This fashion created the dental profession; which, with its lurge manufacturing industries, bas grown upon with in the last two generations. It has reached its present magnitude only because our food in systematically deprived of lims, of salts and phosphoric acid, the Creator's nerve, bone and issue, which especially are so aigually absent from our modern white bread.
