bouses are let, except the under re-construction er re-air, and exrept two of those in Marintaln View which we bought the other day. Except those two, all our houses have been let or sold on favourable terms. You will observe in the state- ment of accounts, amongst the assets, " Crown leasehold estates and buildings" this includes
large estate at Kowloon, and I am pleased to be able to inform you that this estate will soon be valuable for us, by the action of the Govern- ment in making new roads without, which, of course, we could do nothing. I think perhaps very few of you can form any idea of the value of that catate in the event of theextension of the railway system of China to the Kowloon penfas sula, which must come, I think, within the next few years. Our road frontage on the estate is 6189 feet, that is, enr siderably over a mile, comprising Cameron Road, Tico feet; Reblusen Road, 693 ft, Granville Road 2,000 ft, Kimberley Road gan f., Carnarvon Rond 1,000 B,, roughly, It is due to the Director of Public Works in this Colony, (and I may add that thanke are due to the Government for making such in appointment) that the roads have been planned, as far as I can learn, in such a way as to sult our Interests in every way, and to save both us and the Government tens of thousands of dollars. It would have been galte possible to have planned thess roads so as to have coat the Government ten times the amount in making them that it will do now, sed to have cost our Company ten times the amount for filling that it will cost. I havevery little more to say, except that an extraordinary general aceting of shareholders will be called shortly for the purpose
of reducing the value of The shares and to substitute the of my firm as Governing Directors in plact of my own. Gentlemen, I thank you for your attendance; I should have been pleased to have had more shareholders heta to-day, but it is very unusual for a large number of shareholders to attend meetings of companies, unless they have something to grow! nbuil, so that we can take it as a compliment that we have no more *present.

KOREA.-
(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.).
Chemulpo, 7th February.
ם!
We had a long and sometimes almost Siberian winter--at least we felt it so; on one occasion we had 18° centigrade, and on another 10° below zero; on the 8th February we had a snowfall of a foot and a half and, on the 6b March (almost unprecedented) another half foot. The river is open as far as Kang-ring-po, above Kanghos, but at Mapoh, where the river is generally crossed on the passage from this port to Soul, the ice was over a foot thickness; the ferrymen · bave now cat a channel across the ice for their boats, which is a great convenience, because, owing to the vise and fall of the tides, there is always on the edge of the fixed ice on both banks a broken space of flees, which it is unexceptionally inces venient and unpleasant to ero s, and sometimes: it is even very dangerous. The open space, or boat channel, kept free from tee by the boatmen has become the resert or happy hunting-grund of numerous teal, dock and other water-fowl, which swarm amongst the ferry-beats almost as if domesticated. There is a chance for Nimrods, but the place is too far away for our local sports- men, and for the Soul gentry the game is possibly not noble enough; they would level their pop-guns at nothing lower than a royal Korean tiger; but alas! the race is seemingly becoming extinct. I wonder if this siver will ever be spanned by any other bridge than the one built annually for a few brief months by Jack Frost ; there is a splendid locality for a railway bridge across the river mile of two below Mapoh, at Yanghoate, and there are no insurmountable obstacles whatever, In connecting the capital, Soul, with her sea-port, Chemulpo, by tall, The Soal people are very anxiously awaiting the opening of the river. because they are still suffering from famine prices for faci, on account of the high expenses of the overland transport; and as it is well known that most of them are very devout souls, It is to be hoped that they may be fervently praying for at least the establishment of a trim.

a few hours between them, the fastest of each varying from five days 16 hours 'minutes to six day's two hours 31 minutes. The Canard Line is temporarily little behind in the race, but, says the Scottlik Review, a comproy which has shown such sprit in the past is not likely to give up the contest, even with such remarkable competitors as he now his. Twi new steamers, each 600ft, in length, have been ondered, and it is stated that their guaranteed speed is to be za knots on the measured mile, ard 2r knots statute. This lutter speed will enable the passage nerissihe Atlantic to be
accomplished in about five days 10 hours. The relation of speed to safety is a matter of more importance than a difference of a few hours in the length of the voyage.

A Cunard steamer, the Columbia was wrecked by
running ashore in 1843, but it in somewhat remakable that this was the only Atlande steamer lest in 18 years after the disappest ance of the President, a fact which speaks volumes for the quality of the workmanship of the shipbuilders audi engineers, and the skill and -esre of the navigators. In 1854_the_City of Glasgow, with 40 nuls on board, was never heen or heard ofxter she had säiled. Statistics show a great decrease in the number of accidents and losses during what may be called the modern period of the steamship, ne compared with the eariter, and especially with the transition period from salling vessels to steamships, and no doubt it may be accounted for by the fact that the officers in charge were more thoroughly acquainted with their duties, and the ships. The record for the year 1802 was of the most and engines more efficiently constructed.
