Easy, very easy it is to deny now facts that one most condemn and reprove, Oh, it was cruel, very cruel to thus treat poor tolling Inbourers, when ane has ostensibly devoted himself by religious vows to charity and paverty, when one is yet living a sumptuous life out of the sufferings of the poor! But all this must be excused, as feeling ran high, and the pride of the wealthy Dominican order was at stake. Pride and richer make one blind, even the wise, and the Dominicans are not the wisest men, witness the Inquisition, Bat what nobody can excuse is the gratuitous outinge of charging now those same poor villagers as incendiaries, after deprive them of their own and legitimate possessions. RAILWAYS IN FORMOSA.
A correspondent writess-
I am now on my way to Bangkok to work under Mears. Murray Campbell and Co. the Korat railway contractors, and am not sorry to quit the Beautiful Island. When I had finished my time here (Formon) = Chion- man was put in charge of my engine. The second day he knocked a man down when staning the engine, and only the "Good Josy "saved his life. The third day, as the train was leaving Taipehfor, a gauge glass broke John Chinaman jumped off his engine, leaving the Cantonese fireman to do what he could with it. This is a fair sample of the they are "progecesing" with the Formosan railways. Some time ago they boughts Large fron bridge from Capt. Fartar for $23,000, and after all the expense of bringing from Hong- keng, to Talpehlos, and building large boats to take it filty miles down the coast, and then laying down six miles of rails to carry it up into the country, but when at last it arrived on the rallway it was not to be used!
Leaving in the Fokien for Hongkong, we had a strong monsoon and nasty see, but Capt Davis and his officers managed the ship beautifully. They are all good fellows, and the
trip was most enjoyable.

THE NAMCHOW" INQUIRY. The proceedings of the so-called Marine Court of Enquiry, held on the 27th and 8th ultime at the Harbour Masters' Office, Hongkong, must have struck everyone, save perhaps the nautical Dogberrys who formed the tribunal, as a mere travesty and its finding as a judicrous farce. A more hopelessly impotent, Ioane, lame, and feeble finding was never returned before, even by Hongkong court. This is saying a good deal to people who know something of the eccentricities perpetrated in the name of the "for" in that Colony, which seems inextricably bound in red tape and tied in hard knots by the most b-peless set of official Idiots that TV and support the dignity of "Our Sovereign Lady the Queen heaven help us in any part of the word. Hongkong Special Jurles and Hongkong Marine Counta of Enquiry Atem to be running a sort of competition just now as to which can perpetrate the most stily thing in the way of verdicts ned findings, and it is difficult to determine which really deserves the palm, Cetaloiy anything more nega tive, Abortive and absolutely inane has never come before us in the way of a Court Finding than that returned by the tribunal presided aver by the Assistant Harbour Master and bis four colleagues, one of whom was a navigating. Heu tenant in the Royal Navy. The other three were masters in the Mercantile, Marine, men ef practical qualifications, and who, if they did not to be over-ridden by their
and not a word more is to be found on either subject in the reports of the proceedings. By far the most serious omission of all was the failure to call Capt. Lunt, of the China Merchant's atormer Afelfos, who certainly in thereby placed in a very unenviable position. He is charged by the survivors with a horrible act of inhumanity or of gross neglect to go to the aid of the unfortunate people on the Nam- chete, which we are very lath to belleve. Hot this unwillingness to credit such a charge is not sufficient to confatelt. It should have been investigated to the very bottoms, and we bellave that if Capt. Lunt had received the slightest intimation that his presence at the Court was desirable, he would have been found will. ing and ready to throw light upon certain discrepancies between his log notes and the evidence taken at the awor enquiry at Swatow, Doubtless he would have been only too ready to explain everything which at present seems incomprehensible to us and is matter for com mon talk in ahipsing circles. It is a horrible thing to think that the six European officers and "the English wifs of the chief engineer were watching the falfos for what must have been a long time of n'ternating hopes fears to them, before the Namehow went down under their feet into the merciless sea, and all the time bep- leg to be rescued by the Major. The short time that the Meifer stopped to look for floating wreckage-35 ministes according to the Captain's log-too, seems out of all proportion to the magni- tude of the case. It has been stated by many peeple, also, that some of the drowning reiches were rescued after the Affos had gone calmly on her way with nothing more than the Captain's very gliband brict repart to show the part she had played in this almost unparalleled disaster. Capt. Lunt is an American, but we believe this is not a sufficient excase for his, not being requested to Take a statement by the British Court, quite as much in his own interest and for the sake of clearing himself from such grave charges, for the sake of facilitating the enquiry generally. coull only be returned by a Court whose com. "Castilian speaks of "properly owned by the Dominicans." If hy that word "property" be means only a piece of the ground on which Kalamba is, well, it may be not but if that word means the whole village, as the Dominicans priend and cannot prove and cannot be then Casillian betrays his real name. This is the origin of all the trouble. Having the Government in their hands, it was easy enough for the Dominicans to get the verdict of every local Court of Justice irrespective of the rights case. Everybody who knows how matters gland to Manila will not deny that." No proof, no evidence, no title of any kind has been shown at ails they only had to speak, and at once they were able to crush the poor villagers who have been for years working and cultivating those pirces of land they are now depilved of.
