MISTAKES IN THE PAPER, 1.

4

All readers of newspapers—and that means everybody, nowadays-find mistakes in their favorite journal, some of which are amusing and some decidedly annoying; but few stop to think how small the proportion of mistakes, that is, mechanical mistaken, is to that which is absolutely correct, nor do they know, ax a rule, the difficulty which attends the making op and getting out of a daily newspaper.

For example, names of persons and places are often given incorrectly in the telegraphic columns, especially if the person be obscure of

A Tarkib flag was hoisted at the World's Fair grounds on Sept. 20 with appropriate ceremonies. It was raised on the site which Robert Levy, of Constantinople, bas secured for his Turkish specialties. He will reproduce a Constantinopolitan street, show most of the striking features of Turkish life and have a novel And interesting collection of Turkish goods and curios. The flag was raised in conjunction with the stars and stripes, and is the first one of the scores of foreign flags eventually to enliven Exposition scenes.

It is expected that there will be folly 3,000 dogs entered in the Exposition bench show. The various kennel clubs propose to supplement the already satisfactory premium list by a number of very handicme medals,'

['general notice. When it is called to mind that this name hus, very likely, been first translated into English, then written down, and then trans- miited and repeated by prasibly half a dozen separate telegraphic systems before it reaches its destination, the only wonder is that it bears any semblance to the original.

In every well-regulated office naties are checked by the gaatteer or cyclopedia of blography, or in some such way, but the trouble comes with the names which have not yet got into the books of reference. The telegraph editor in such a cass is compelled to rely upon bis own judgment of the etsinsi fitness of things, He would know that a name consisting chiefly of consonants would not belong to Spanish of

·Italian chief's name would scarcely begin with an Oor geography and that an Afghan rebel a Mic unless he had been transplanted ; but there are only the rudiments of the difficultles which beset the path of the telegraph editor,

It is understood, of course, that the proof. reader is expected to know everything, but, as matter of fact, he does not, and if he did, some of the manuscript by which he must correct his proofs would defy bis omniscience. There are persons who can never be made to appreciate the difference in the forms of letters. To them, when they write, the u and the n and the w, and even the o and the v, are exactly the same.

even the skill of the proof-render to present to | zr, you the readers of the newspaper in correct forms. Again, the time limit on a daily paper is so small that mistakes are inevitable because there le not time enough to look them up and correct them. The dear public, for whom newspapers are made, demands its news fresh and plping bot, the cont quince being that the newspapers. must put off going to press until the very intent parable moment. If the reader who fussen over an occasional mistake could be admitted behind the scenes and see the last few minutes before the

paper goes to press he would wonder that it was not all mistakes instead of being sub- stantially correct in every essential respect.

This has been sld not by way of apology, for the daily newspaper needs no apologist, but by way of explanation. It is so easy to criticise, especially upon a subject of which we know comvery little, and our critici m pleases ourselves, if nobody else, All we desire to suggest is that when the critic finds the name of some little hamlet in Russia spelled with a i too many or too few, or the name of some South Sex island princeling put in a form which he does not recognize at once, he should ascribe the error not to ignorance or carelessness, but to circum stances over which even the newspaper could bare no control-5. France has asked 25,000 and The Hague 11,000 square feet of space for their picture exhibits alone. Until recently it was thought that the weakest feature of the Exposition would be its fine arts exhibit. Now, however, it is belleved that this will be one of the beat of all, ewing to the fact that Europena artists recognize in Americans the best purchasers of their work, and they are anxious to take advantage of the exceptional, oppurtunity which the Exposition will offer them to show their paintings to the American people.

GETTING INTO SOCIETY.

Ward McAllister, writing In the New York World, says that society includes the whole social world" The Smart Set," "The Literary Set," fa fact, all sets. In the words of Disraeli, Personal distinction is the only passport to it. Whether this distinction arises from fortune, family, or talent is immaterial, but certain it is to enter the best society, a man mast have, either blood, a million or genius.

I cannot conclude this article better than by giving you the following from Disraeli as a bright and telling view of what he thought would be human happiness.
