Whether regarded, from a scientific, religieuser pbilosophic standpaint, it is a very re- markable book. Its 'tond is similar to the bellef of the average Chilstian. It teaches the exist ence of a greater power for good (Ormus or Ahura Mazda) and another for evil (Ahriman or Harlanana); that life' is a long struggle between right and wrong; that virtue is rewarded and vice ponished in this world and the

next, and that the san, fire or best is the origin of all physical life, as God is the origin of all spiritual existence. It tells the story of Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, the temptation by the ser pent, the deluge and, in fact, nearly all the stories that appear in the first part of Genests, The resemblance is more than accidental. It han convinced many of the lending Bible scholars of the present generatlan that Genesis is merely a retelling of the Zendavesta and in character and origin is more Iranic than Hebraic,

Mr. H. Bathurst, the Treasurer, then laid the balance sheet of the accounts for the past half year on the table. PARSEES IN THE EAST.

THEY ARE THE OLDEST RACK IN THE WORLD.

Followers of Zoreaster.

The East is fall of Pirates. On every steamer, at the hotels and thea res, on the promenade or drive, is seen these swarthy children of Bombay. Slender, st and angel us, they presrevery where. The principal profession is in buying Copra from the-lly k, and telling yarn to the Hakks. They tride wholes de, and retill opium to every victim of h poisonous pipe. They lend money at every rate of interest, from a few cash to the hand-ubman to lacs of rupees to banks and great adi ghongs. They are the Lombards of the Ent. Every re-writer knows theth and is glad to see them in a Targe land, for their presence mens order, bu inass meth diand a more or lera decent polies system. But how many realise in meeting a Parsee, that they are In the presence of the oldest race, the oldest language, the oldrat religion and the oldest civil zulon known to mine?

The name Parste is but a corruption of the name of theirfa herland Persia. This they call Iran, and themselves Izana or Irania. Where they come fomořů i vliv no one knows, although learned philogists have quarreled over the ques tion for ages. Ling before the wolf-suckled twins had built the walls of Rome of the Aryan warriors had invaded India they had some Bort of a civilization in Western Asia. We can learn but little of lis fentures. It had a code of laws, a'm'es, priests, social distinctions and a primitive and probably poʻytheistic faith, This was at least six thousand years ago, and prssibly sixten theus nd. It was before the time of Abraham, and long before Noah, went to sen. They are truly the old timers" out here, but they do not regard the newcomer with that comfortable schen expressed and often flustrated in the grab-stake squatters of our Western Territovies when a rreept arrival termed "tenderfoot" effec's a location ; but, on the contrary, the Parsee of the East is affable and amishte, punctiliously polite, cordial and Courteous in minner and speech, and, above all, what is mon refreshing in this quarter of the globe, he possesses that very attractive quality that is likened unto godliness-he is a model of cleanliness.

The Pastelsaran avis in the United States. The last census doesn't report more than 4 hundret. Possibly Censuaker Porter and Mayor Grant may increase this number.

I was never able to learn from books how large their total numbers were in the world. One authority makes them-100 000-strong-another, equally learned, multiplies this by three. The most satisfactory information I have obtained on the sub-ct came from a merchant of their race in Singapore. Our roles of living," he aid, "tend to restrict these of the family to a pojot at which our numbers remain stationary. The arrenard kil of physicians has undoubt edly lowered the death rate and so apparently Increased cur tanks within the past twenty years, but I question if the diffe ence in more than-thres-per cent. We ara cianofib, and keep a sharp eye bron all our members. In most countries religions inleration is the rule, and then we know the numbers of our race. But fa many Mohammedan lɩnds (Arabia, Persia, Afghanistan and Turkey) where the split of fanaticism prevails, most of us are obliged to pretend to be followers of Islam. According to our best knowledge we number about 50,000, of which 110,500 are in Hindustan, and its reaf are scast red all over the world. We tigard the city and provings of Bombay as our köme, and try to neruma ate ancugh wealth to go there and live comfortably in our old age. There is 'n says that in tre fullness of time we shall go back prophecy among us that in half forgotten, which and oc-uy our cap't-1 in Iran (Patil.) and again be one of the great eat ons ifta ratk

In truth, it f the Farsee's const int compa-i-n.

The language in which the brok le Witten, Zend, bears the same relation to Sinserit as. the latter dies to Grok mnd Latin. It is It la ampler, stranger and more sonarous, nearer that slave in which our speech was trans- parent, and e-ch root and syllable had its force and valar. To hear Parsee rending prayers lo to hear a chant marvellously melod our, moth and deligh ful. To file or sixty centu les it has changed but little. Zorouter would be at home to-day in the paince of Parste merchant prince, and could a young Bombalaman be tran- sported bark to the days of Xerxes and Darius he wond find no difficulty in seling the sutler a full supply of sheddy and brummagem,

Is there a schoolboy who does not know the golden age of Persian history? Is mighty wars with Akkad, Assyris, Babylon, and Egrpi? Its countless armies, which conquer d Asla, but were foled and warquished by the Gie-k heroe ? Its autfug tion by Alexrder the Great; its becoming a vassal province to one General after another; its absorption by Rome; its fruitless attempts for independence, and its final obilera-

Afries, "Worship our gad ar die!" was the cry in Spain and in Penis likewise,

It is wid that there were 50 onco Persian at the beginning of the cude; 3,000,000 fell by the sword, 1,000,sex jured the faith of their fithers, and a miserable remnant managed to fly through Afghanistan into India, where they were welcomed and protected by the native princes. But this chosen few preserved their faith intact, and their offspring preserve it to-day. Not far from my Consulate is the residence of a wealthy Parsee. Many a morning at sunrise 1 have seen him spread his prayer-rng upon the manf, and as the first light of the dawning day appeared fall upon his knees and pray as did his ancestor fire
