A Flonncial review by Mr. J. Boisgevatn states that much speculation is going on in tobacco shares and no Company is safe. '. In consequence, the market is depreciated and shareholders are frightened. Opiniers are expressed that Deli Maatschapp:] shares will fall 1300 per cent., the Deli Batavia 150 per cent, and the Sen mbah to below par. It is, therefore, as well to sketch shortly the position of the various Companies. Of the 1890 crop, the Dell Mastschapply will place 48,000 bales on the market, of which 38,000 have altedy heen realized at 95 cents per Amsterdam pound; the Deli Butavia will place about 12,500 baler, of which good have already been sold at 91 coats; and the Senembah will place 14 000 biles, of which 10,000 have been sold at 81 cents. The crop per field was very large, and, in consequence, the price fell. In former years the cost price came to 95 or 100 cents per bale, so that, considering the large output this year, there enn be no question of loss, The Sanembah Com- piny, especially, bhas always worked cheaply, From its prospectus we learn that the 1888 crop sold at ros cents and left a profit of as per cent.onger. All this hugger-muggering anent grandeur on a capital of 1,500,000 f., the number of bales and greatness and "everlasting emplie syony- being 12,000, and the profit 330,000 f. From:

If the present low price were due to tobacco from other countries being put on the market with success, then that would be some. thing to trouble about. The planters who 'nie able to tide over the present prices will reap beavy profits in the future. Many estates have closed and many others wil f low, but this can only do good to those that remain.
