The American Presbyterians have a Misilor House or chapel at a place right in the midst of them, but I have not heard of their attacking that, or annoying the persons con- nected with it. He told them he was not a preacher, they could come to marrow as the preacher would be there they then mounted the platform, Yours truly,

Among the recent, inventions is a calendar that will register for the next 300 years, besides telling any date figure within that period.

Papler maché oil-cans, which are now belog made, are very durable and impervious to any spirit or oil likely to be used in

machine-room.

White tar is one of the latest inventions or discoveries. It will not become soft under the sun's rays in any climate, and is expected to be used largely in caulking the deck seams of fine yachts.

A Frenchman has invented a process for obtaing chlorate of potash by electricity, the feature about it being that the by-products are of sufficient value to pay for the whole cost of working.

Very satisfactory results are now being obtained by some of the English paper manu- facturers in bleaching paper by electricity, the process rendering the paper perfectly white without in the least injuring (te strength.

By new process a superior, quailty of illu minsting gas is made from wood (maple pre- ferred) and crude oil. It is called the Ramidell process, and the inventor is said to barC expender $40,000 in perfecting it. Charcoal is the residue from the wood after extracting the gas.

A late Inventin, the carbon cur-wheel, fr described as being a thick rubber bind placed between the tire and centre of the wheel which acts as a cushion, absorbing all vibra tien". The rubber is so attached is to make any danger from a hot box or fromTM corsonive action an improbabilly.

When the authorities selze any alive they treat them very barbarously indeed. They have, as they suppose, one of the leaders or chiefs, though the report is that he is a brother of one of the leaders. They gave him more than a thousand stripes, and then put him under the torture of the "Butterfly Frame," with arms extended to the utmost. I beat that another contingent of go braves passed on to the disturbed districts two days ago.

These bands would not have been so formid- able es at present had a sharp short stroke been given last year. The hands have grown in boldness and daring chiefly through the supine. ness of the authorities, but partly also owing to the unreasonable restrictions the Chinese people are under with regard to the use of fire-arms for purposes of self-defence. I presume the local magistrate could have issued permission to tho people long ago to defend themuluse against thelo marauders.
