THE WEEK'S SHARE BUSINESS.

+ Hongkong, November 7th. During the past week aliare business generally has, notwithstanding outside opposing Influences, shown considerable Improvement, and a much larger amount *** of cash transactions have been put through" than has been the case for a long time past. Although there is a better, änd healthier feeling all round, rates have not substantially improved; but this is solely owing to the unfortunate and (in our opinion) ill-advised policy purfied by the Hongkong and Shanghal Bank in forcing the shares of weak holders on the market at ab hopportune time and thereby Inten sifying the Dead Sea depression which has existed for so long. Who is to blame for this we have not been informed, nor is it our business to inquire; let those concerned defend their own interests.

Banks have been placed during the week at as high as 159 per cent, premtura for cash and 160 for delivery on the 25th Inst; but these transfers were only of minor importance, and shares are now freely offered for cash at 158. In the stock of the Bank of China, Japan and the Straits, absolutely nothing has been done since we last wrote, and the quotation stands nominally at 13 The National Bank of China's scrip also, remains quiescent-Ordinaries' offering at 55 per cent, discount, whilst Founders are wanted at 8235.

In Marine Insurances, Chira Traders have led to business at 61 and 62, but shares are still offering at the lower rate. Cantons have changed hand at rs and the demand at that figure contiues. Other Insurance shares are, for the nongent, out of the market.

Steamboats have again, attracted a considerable amount of attention. A fair business has been transacted at 344 and 35 for cash-the buyers being principally Shanghat investors and also at 36 for next January. A rumour, has been prevalent that the Hon. Mr.Keswick's visit to Shanghai has for its chief object the signing of an amicable agreement between the China Merchants, Butterfield & Swire's, and the Indo-China Co., on terms previously arranged between the heads of these opposing factions. This may safely be taken as a mere canard; but were It otherwise, we fall to see in what fashion It could benefically affect the Interests of the Steamboat Co. Let the China Merchants' steamer be withdrawn from the Canton river, and nothing. Iš more certain than that another opponent will take her place without delay. The Directors of the Steamboat Company will be wise to at once recognise the fact that there is an opposition on the river which they are bound to fight to a finish, and to take proper steps to ensure victory In that fight. They ought to have parted "good friends!" with the China Navigation Co. years ago, and had they done so, the deservedly unpopolar flag of Butterfield and Swire would lang ere this have been a rara avis in the river traffic. It is never too late to mend the Steamboat Company Directors have plenty money at their. command; let them build in Hongkong three more White Clouds on a larger scale, send "the Heungthan up the Yangtze to invade the enemy's country, start that old bone-shaker the Kinking on the Canton night service, for which she is admirably sulted and in which he will render good service for the next five years, nail their colours to the mast, defy 'all opposition, fight to the bitter end, and within three years the pioneers of the Canton River Service will again be monarchs of all they survey. One or two changes in the Directorate will, however, have to be made; but on this question we refrain, for excellent reasons, from going into details just at present. By-and-bye, in the very nearby-and-bye, it will have to be very seriously handled. Hongkong is not the Deutscher's Fatherland, and on that point the Telegraph intends to appeal in no uncertain terms to the British community of this colony. We have had about enough of Posinatcher and Co. and theireagdag | and bob-tall following: Hurroo!

Indo-Chinas'; In spite of the almighty prestige of the "Princely House," don't Improve worth a cont; transfers are såld I to have been accomplished at 271 per cent. discount, but at that quotation there are plenty shares on the market. And yet the Indo-China Company bear the reputation of being the best paying abipping concern on the China coast. Twenty-seven and a half per cent. "discount instead of fifty per cent. premium. Where dor the money go to?

**

-Barly to the week Decks dropped to 73 per cent, premium; but owing to the mishap to the steamer Zyhining a reaction set in, and business has been done since 'at as high as 76 for cash and 77 for this month's Cattlements. The stock is now in strong

demand at 76.
