It is reported in well-informed native circles, says the Shanghai Mercury, that the French claims arising out of the Wuhu riots have been ret led by M. Wagner, the Consal-General here for the Republic, and the Shanghai Tantal, for the sum of Tis. 110,000. We also hear that telegrams from Peking have been received by Chinese Bankers to the Settlement, announcing that the home oreigners in the Tching flot for a lump sum of £150,000. We give these reports for what they may be worth, without re- sponsibility; but one thing scome certain, vis, that the Chinese themselves are much less prehensive of trouble with the Western powers than they were a few weeks ago.
