JOHN POPE HENNESSY.

A Renter's telegram published in another column sunounces the death of Sir John Pope Hennessy, M.P., who was Governor of Hong kong from 1877 to 1882. No news that "His Excellency was in ill health had reached here, and as, according to latest advices, he was taking an active share in the vexed question of Irish politics, it may be assumed that his death was sudden and unexpected.'

John Pope Henncasy was the son of Mr. John Hennessy, of Ballyhennessy, Co. Kerry, by Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. Henry Casey, of Cork.

He was born in Cork In 1834, educated at Qiteen's College, Cork, and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1851, having previously entered the House of Commons to member for King's county in 1850. His election address
