August 19th. Mr. Ya, the assistant manager In the office of Foreign Affairs at Nanking, is at prestat in Chinklang co-operating with the Total in settling the claims for the damages done by the rioters in Tanyang, Kiangyin, Tungchow, Kükao, Wusih and Kinkwei, all these places being within the Chinklang Trotal's jurisdiction,

Mr. Yũ, a Prefect in'rank, has been educated In Europe, and speaks both French and English very fluently. He has also a good knowledge of law and western methods of procedure, and is { [Adot," sald to make good use of this in cross-questioning the witnesses, siting the evidence and bilaging the facts of the case to light.

Up to the present time, the claims of only two places, Tanyang and Klangyin, hava bean settled, the former at about $12,000, the latter at $9,000. The claims of the other places are before the Commission, and a speedy settlement is looked for. Each of these two places is to have the pleasure of furnishing the money to pay for the bonfire they had.

We are having cholera this year as urust in Chinklang. But when one thinks of the filthy and undrained condition of the streets, and the stag- nant ponds in which the people wash their rice before cooking It, the only wonder is that it is not wore. Fifteen to twenty deaths a day are said to occur, and on one day last week it la claimed that as many as seventy died. This latter estimate, though, I suppose, is an exaggeration. As the centre of the cholera district is at the West Gate of the city, which is a mile or so from the Settle- ment, the foreigners have little fear of It reaching them.

The cool weather of the last few days is a most delightful change, and we are all enjoying it to the full.

We have had very seasonable weather for some time now, and the rice and other crops could not look better.-N. C. Daily News.

We have little of a riotous nature to report from this region. The province of Szechuan THE SCOTTISH ORIENTAL STEAMSHIP would hardly seem to be sustaining its reputation as one of the most turbulent in the empire. Per- sonally we think it is nothing of the wort, though occasional outbreaks have fed many to think so. About two weeks ago a riot was reported at Yuuyangbalen, the city next above Kucichonfu And a little less than half way from Iching to Chungking. We have not learned the particulars of the disturbance, but the property of the Roman Catholics the only missionaries there, is said to be in ruins.

We seem quiet enough here, though one or two things have occurred which have caused a litle uneasinesss. Rumours were circulated of children being kidnapped by native Christians at a village about a day's journey from here, and one of them was sald to have been traced to Chungking. At another time there appeared on the door of one of the street chapelsa placard warning people not to be deceived by these preachers of false doctrine and adding a few foul things about priests and

auns. However, as there were no threats to loat, burn, beat or küll, H.M. Consul did not feel called upon to take 'an official notice of it. When these are omitted; the foreigner In China, since he must draw the line somewhere, may as well consider hiraself treated like a gentlemen. Yesterday some dissolute fellows made a row and smashed up some furniture in a disreputable house in the city, and when complaint was made of them they were arrested together with an "Elder Brother" of the Kolao Hut, a well

· known Astuttal, whom they had threatened to bring to their assistance Fortunately the mem- bers of this secret society are not reputed to be numerous in Chungking, and evidently it will not be best for them to attract official attention.

A letter which appeared in your columns recently from a resident of Ichang has caused some comment here. It would seem rather late to begin a crusade against the foreigner adopting the native costurae since it is worn by all the Catholic and nearly ball the Protestant missiona- ries. If I choose to wear the dress of my native country this gives me no right to dictate as to the practice of others. We should think no sensible person would object to criticisms of missionary, methods which were carried on in tolerant tone and spirit, but such harab and uncalled-for expressions as "men and women huddled together In a boat" will naturally be resented and tend to react upon the writer of them. On this point your correspondent feels constrained to offer his testimony in the Interest. of fairness and justice. He bas either seen or been cognisant of every party of missionaries which has come from Ichang to Chungking

anything improper in their travelling arrange- ments. Every party has consisted of "ingle men or of slagle men or single women only, in the charge of married missionaries. The only exception is the recent one to which he alludes, in which half a score of unprotected young ladies set out for the far interior. Perhaps their pur pose was to obviate his objection to their being "huddled together with the men. He speaks of their course as "tempting Providence," but the outcome might lead one to conclude that Providence favoured their project. They arrived here in safety and a part of them pursued their unprotected and uneventful journey by land route 1,000 fi further, to the capital of this pro vince. By colacidence the leader of the party, one of the most estimable Indies whom it has ever been our good pleasure to meet, reached here on her return" at the same time as your issue containing the aforesaid letter. While we are on the missionary tople it might be interesting to notice the large influx of mis- sionaries of different societies. An unusual number has come within the past year, but the number to come in the autumn will be quite unprecedented. Already there la certain news of the coming of more than a score to this province alone, and the number to come to the tbres western provinces during the year will not probably fall much short of half a hundred.
