A MAN named Hun Asam was up before Mr. Wise this morning to answer to the charge of having stolen a young girl, who was the daughter of an employee of a Mandarin at Lamchues, on the a7th June last. The mother of the girl, together with a "jous" brother came over to Hongkong to search for the missing one, | and fell in with the accused who wanted to take then to Kowloon to negotiate for the release of the girl. This the woman objected to, and in an indiscriminate way raised #Cain on the Praya. Bystanders intervened and persuaded the mother to go to the Tung-wa Hospital to report her case. This she did and the accused was arrested in consequence, and this morning was the recipient of the well merited sentence of alx months "hard," during which term be will have many apportunities of quietly deciding, whether or not, the game was worth the candle. THE condition of the Woosung Bar is, says the N. C. Daily News, reviving the iden of making Woosung the port of Shanghal; and It is stated that a large English firm greatly la- terested in shipping has just secured an extensive tract of land at Woosung, and a negotiating for permission to reconstinct the Woosing railway. It is hardly likely, however, that this is more than a rumour, for it is known that the Viceroy at Nanking, Lin, bas laid it down very strongly that title deeds are not to be granted to foreigners for land outside treaty ports, and Woosung not so recoguised. As to the bar, it has its good and its bad times, as it has had for the last fifty years; and it is very doubtful whether the dredging has done it any permanent good. It seems likely to remain as erratic as it always has been, at one time looking as if it would time causing little or no delay to the largest never let farge ships over it again, and then for vessels.
