THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JULY 6, 1891.
The camphor trade, is a very profitable bual- ness. It is now about $11 per picul in Formosa and sells for from 350 to $60 per picul in Hongkong-whence it is exported to Europe and America. The right to produce camphor is "farmed out to Chinese, who pay to Govern- ment 80 cents per picul per month. The farmers dole out money to their countrymen who, under protection of the soldiery, go into the forests and there cut down the camphor tree and distil the sap. There is, it should he stated, a great evil connected with the production of camphor in this Island. The trees are hewn down in large numbers every years, and in thele Thus planted. places no other trees are disforestation, while gradually encroaching on savage territory, is going on apace, "Plenty chow chow' to-day, maskce to-morrow" appears to be John's motto in Formosa,

In plain language, if we grumbla too much, the Supreme Court for China and Japan will be abellahed, and Shanghai will have only a Consular Court, such as there is now at Tientsin; and not only will the Supreme Court at Hongkong be made our Court of Appeal, but possibly all cases involving over a certain sum "heavy work "wl have to go there to be tried. An attempt to teach the natives the modus operandt of silk cultivation some two years ago coded in failure. Silkworms were reared and a little silk of excellent quality was produced, but the natives make such a good thing out of their labours in the tea season that they cannot be induced to trouble themselves to lake up the new enterprise. The only way to get the silk industry fairly started would be for mulberry trees to be grown there in large numbers and for Chinese labour to be imported under special contract.

June 37th. I am told by the Chinese, who get their information from the ramens, that the regiment of soldiers here has been sent to the capital of the province and a new regiment from that city has replaced them. The reason given for the change is that in case of any trouble arising the men of the regiment here could not be depended because many of them are natives of the plan and have families residing here.
Very stringent measures are being taken here; at all the inns the guests have to register their names, ages, and addresses. After the second watch of the right no one is permitted to pass along the streets without a lantern.

There may be those who wish to know by show what right we persist in forcing ourselves into Amy places where we are not wanted, throwing official Amplo persons into such a fluster, and resulting in co proceedings which sometimes can hardly be called edifying. Well, we do so fa virtue of a very ancient charter. It is to be found in the second Fealm and provides that the heathen shall be given to Christ for an inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for his possession, It is also done in fulfilment of a prophecy uttered by Christ, recorded.by both St. Mathew and St. Mark, that the gospel shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations. And also in obedience to His last command to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Thus certain folks have it impressed upon their minds that it is their duty to
go on this mission, some to the most inaccessible Masky comers of the Dark Continent, some to the lonely Fochow.... islands of unfrequented seas, and some to Inland Chinese elties or wherever the uttermost parts. The country here is billy with but few towns of any alse. The people are friendly and the houses unusually neat and clean. These our escort, would not hear of our visiting. "No," said Captain Liao," the proverb says there are three establishments a man must keep out of gambling, brothels, and mining" and the proverb settled the question. We saw a number of people searching for gold, which
