We did not wait to see who won, but departed while the fight was at te wermast, Victory, however, declared in favour of the powers that be, and on our return they were all fall of the doughty deeds they had dono that day. But just as Lamb tells us, when in ancient times the Chinese people were being rendered houseless by the R supposed necessity for burning down a house in order to obtain roast pig, a great genius arose who showed them how pork could be I cooked by a less ruinous method; so at Slangtan some suge'must have pointed out that it was pat necessary havo a pitched battle, with all its risks and unpleasantnesses, in order to drive away a foreign devil. After the expe sience of the fight we confined our operations to the boat, and on various visita, anchored some 200 yards from the shore, disposed of thousands of books there. But one time, in passing

Slang. tan, in company with an eminent and highly respected D.D., we thought we might venture of a call, We found no trochle on shore until certain men arrived from the yamin, with the request that we should return to our boat, and meet the authorities who were waiting us there. We did so, and while still engaged in discussing matters, a great smoke was raised on shore, and the fire

gongs wounded all over the city. This brought together an Imense crowd which, there being no äre to attend to, found amusement in throwing stones at us. To avoid this we pulled out and anchored in mid stream; but hardly had we done so when a great phout directed our attention up the river, and behold there was coming sweeping down upon us a big gun jans fail of men armed with long- handled indies. For ammunition they had a goedly row of buckets such as Chinese farmers carry home from market with them, and they evidently meant business. There are some things which foreign flesh and blood cannot face. We did not need a second look, but with our own handa' get up the anchor and sall, and hurried away as fast as the wind could take us. So mach for my story. Now let me tell you another man's store, as ho told it to me. He is an American named Alderson, and lives at a place called Sink's Grove, West Virginia. Ho is a gentleman of high character. He said: "Seven years ago to-day I took my weight on the

Iron works for the construction of steel rails for rallways, steel for gun founding, and mer cantile iron, have been begun near Hanyang, on the western bank of the Han River.

The masonry for blast furnaces, both by the Bessemer process and by the Siemen-Martin process, is being rapidly, constructed, and machinery from England has been ordered. Much of the machinery has arrived at Shanghal, and is only waiting for the river to rise bere to be brought to Hankow...

In February, when I visited these ironworks, I found there two locomotives and about three- quarters of a mile of railway laid. The works kre situated on the River Han, and arrangements being made to have a jetty on the Yangtze,

It is contemplated, in the first fastance, to turn out 100 tons of stect rails per day, and ultimately to increase the cut put to 200 tons a day. This is exclusive of mercantile iron and steel for guns, The ground to be covered by the Ironworks is 2,728 feet by goo feet, or more than thirty acres. Good Iron ore has been discovered at Huang Kang, about fifteen miles down the river, and twenty miles infand.

As yet, suitable coal has not been found in this province; but hopes are entertained that a further search will reveni saltable fuel. The last few days coal has been brought down from Ta Yeh, near the fron mines, with regard to the
