A terrible riot occurred yesterday afternoon in the suburban area of Calcutta, A Babu had a kuicha mosque, and he applied to the Court lately purchased a plot of land on which there was for leave to remove the mosque. The Mohame dans opposed the application, but the Court decided against them, and allowed them fifteen days to remove the mosque themselves. The fifteen days expired the day before yesterday, and yesterday, the Mohamedana, thinking the Babu assembled in large numbers with bludgeons. A small body of police then went to disperse the unlawful assembly, but were beaten back. Additional police were sent but were again routed. Finally, Mr. Lambert, Commissioner of Police, went to the spot with all the available European and Native police. The Mohamedans were by this time in a great state of excitement, and numbered quite two thousand, and almost at once a desperate encounter ensued. At first it seemed as if the pplice would get the worst of the fight, and application was then made for the services of the military. Two hundred men of The Buffs, with forty rounds of ammunition cach, were promptly despatched from Fort William in tram-cars, but before they reached the scent of action, were met by Mr. Barnard,
