Finally, Mr. Lambert, Commissioner of Police, went to the spot with all the available European and Native police. The Mohamedans were by this time in a great state of excitement, and numbered quite two thousand, and almost at once a desperate encounter ensued. At first it seemed as if the pplice would get the worst of the fight, and application was then made for the services of the military. Two hundred men of The Buffs, with forty rounds of ammunition cach, were promptly despatched from Fort William in tram-cars, but before they reached the scent of action, were met by Mr. Barnard,
