Tux N. C. Daily News says that a dust storm which commenced at Shanghai last Monday morning was experienced also at Chinklang, Pootoo, Gutzlaff, and Tientsin on the same day At Bootoo the wind sprang up at p.m. and in a few minutes it was impossible to see fifty yards in any direction. The dust which fell was yellow and settled to the dépth of over a quarter of un inch.

A TELEGRAM to a Japanese contemporary, dated Nagoya, April 28th, says :-Yesterday at 3 pm. a temporary building employed for storing gun- powder, for the use of troops now being reviewed at Obala-ga-hara, Higashi-Kurugal, Qwali, was blown up, several persons being killed and some wounded. Great alarm was caused by the explosion.
YESTERDAY afternoon a boatman picked up the body of a Chinaman floating in the harbear off the slaughter-house, West Point. The matter was reported to the Police, and Inspector Mackie had the body conveyed to the Govern ment mortuary. Upon ac examination being made it was seen that the deceased had evidently been scalded to death, and it was thought that he might have been another of the unfortunate victims of the recent boller explosion on board the steam launch Macao; but the crew, and agents, who viewed the remains, failed to identify them.

IT will be seen from our advertising columns that the list of applications for Punfor preference shares will close on the 15th last. As some doubt appears to exist in the minds of share holders as to the meaning of the preferential shares we may state for general information that the 11 per cent. cumulative dividend is a pre- ferential right on the new shares, and this charge has to be first met before the old shareholders receive dividends; but that if the Company be so fortunate as to earn sufficient to givà say so per cent, on the whols capital (new and old), then both new and old would receive zo per cent. The preferential shares are exactly the same as at ordinary share, with the additional right of taking first dividend up to 13 per cent.cumulative.
