"It now becomes my task to restore this unity and reconstract our movement, lapping off all unsound materials and taking effectual cautions against the admission in the future our army of any weak, treacherous or self-seeking element. The first afternoon is not a pleasant experience, even when it has the advantage-if it is an advantage of novelty. From 4 pm to 6, sitting on a cold iron bedstead, looking blankly at the miserable hunk of bread, and the unusable water-bult, hearing gates clang at intervals with a jar that goes through you, feeling cold and yet stiffed with the oppressive atmosphere, the o'clock the officer in charge unlocks the gate again, and gruffly

This solice must have been drawn up by a genius, It begins by saying that "Prisoners are forbidden to break the rules of the Gaol," but as the rules are in a book stowed away out somewhere in the Superintendent's office, entirely inaccessible to the parties for whose behoof they were made, the warning loses a good deal of its point. The notice proceeds to forbid talking, laughing, Insolence, gambling (now, what does the Daily Rumour say?) and any other forms of lifting the safety valve. The man who could stay in gaol a month without fracturing those commandments pretty badly deserves to be let out and compelled to wear the balo of a C.M.G. By 5.30 every cell is locked, and a few minutes later our friend hears a distant round of clanking locks, and bears the loud order from
