TRIAL TRIP ON THE PEARL RIVER.

must be congratulated; and as storekeepers in Korea it is to be hoped for their own sake that they may keep a wonderful stock of patience in store. The head of the firm, Mr. F. H. Morsel, has an intimate kaawledge of the country and people, which, combined with his well known energy, are sure to push the new enterprise for wird most favourably.—Shanghai Mercury.

NANKING.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

"

Yesterday afternoon (2nd inst) a party con string of Messrs. George Peebles (Government Marine Surveyor), R. C. Dixon (Assistant Surveyor), John MacDonald, H. Wicking, James Sampson, Hector Sampson, representative of this journal, and several Chinese merchants Interested in the shipping traffic between Hong- kong and the City of Rams, assembled on board the new river steamer Tat-on, Capt. C. Gobloskie, which started on her official trial, trip at two During the past two or three days some evil o'clock.

minded persons have been sowing the city with Leaving her anchorage at Wanchai the Tai-auti-foreign tracts of a most seditious character. ex steamed through the man-of-war bay into the They are directed chiefly, against Christian merchant shipping anchorage, and ran full speed missionaries both Catholic and Protestant, and on a course wet, for the Cap-sul-man Pass and appeal to the people to, rise in defence of the Castle Peak Bay where, answering her heim like doctrines of the sages, but recommend measures a racing yacht, she "went about and got back to which the ages could hardly be expected to Hongkong at 5.30 pm, after a very pleasant approve, implying if not urging the forcible and successful trip during which the health of expulsion of the obnoxious foreigners from the the skipper and success to the enterprising country. The language is of course standerous owners were drunk in bumpers of Heldricks and blasphemous, as has been reported of such best "white real,"

productions elsewhere. They repeat all the vile to the stories that have been told for years character and practices of missionaries. The tracts indeed bear the imprint of some Hunan ('secret society, and are perhaps the same as were

circulated in that province last year.

The Tai-on has not been entirely built in Hongkong. She was built up originally in Glasgow, to the order of Mr. H. Wicking on Chinese account, by Messrs. Alley & Maclellan of plates supplied by the Steel Company of Scotland, was then taken to pieces, sent cut to this colony and put together by Messrs. Kwong Hip Loong of Wanchai, who also made the engines. She is 180 feet long, 36 feet bread, with a depth of

of feet. Her deck is plates canied by steel beams and stanchions, the upper deck being of teak supported by steel beams, while the awaing deck is constructed of Oregon pine laid on steel beams. Unlike most ships, the Tai-on has a longitudinal balkhead running the whole length of the ship, fore and aft, divided by six water-tight bulkheads -including two staunch collision bulkheads- which render her, for her trade, practically unsinkable, by collision or otherwise. She draws 6 feet of water when "flying light" And more than 8 feet fally laden with about 600 tous of cargo and 1,187

which passengers, for

number license has been granted. The accommodation for both passengers and officers on board this exceelingly suitable river baat is, incomparable with anything of the kind yet met with at the Canton river, in as much as it is at once luxuriou and adequate in every way, shape and form. The Chinese saloon, which is fitted with lounges A la Chinoise, will accommodate fully 60 persons, while the Chinese dark passengers are provided with comfortable salosan, wickerwork chairs and dluing tables. Europeans, too, have a very neatly furnished saloon set apart for them, and a cook who knows just how to disk up follin' map chow chow "is at their service. -The Tat-on's engines are of the compound aur- face condensing type, which, working up to Ro horse-power nominal, drive twin screws which propel her through the water at the rate of fully. nine knots per hour. But it is hardly likely that the Tafen will be driven at top speed for the reason that she is to be what is locally known as a"night boat," and as such there would be no advantage in getting up to Canton before 6 am. The Talon is commanded by Captain C. Cobloskie, while the engines are in charge of Mr. Alexander Parker, late chief engineer of the Pasig. In charge of such old experienced and with powerful Chinese hands Influence at her back, there can be but little doubt that the Tal-am has a helillant' career of usefulnem before her-Courts of Survey and such Bike minor affairs notwithstanding. It may be mentioned that Mr. John Macdonald superintended the construction of the Tol-on in the interest of the owners, and that she can, if her owners desire be classed as high as any river steamers on Lloyd's Reglater,

Incidentally it may be mentioned that the Taf-ón (which, by the way, means "great peace" in a literal and "good fortune"! ia Ал abstract sense) was designed to pass both Lloyd's and the Board of Trade river service requirements, but the owners thought fit to submit their vessel to the local Government survey only, which is quite sufficient for the requirements of the Canton trade 'as evidenced by the policy

The writer has seen sixteen different kinds and there may be others. Several of these pretend to be issued in the name of the Emperor, one having in bold characters at the top the

dragons another is issued in the name of the Dowager, also of course a forgery. One in pamphlet form professes to be a petition to the Peking government by eight Him officials of Hunan to expel the hated heretics from the land. That stale and blasphemous pun of the "Heavenly Hog" is paraded on all of them, and one denounces the man who may hinder the burning of the church as worthy to have his own house burned, his lands confiscated and himself destroyed.

The attention of the Klang-ling en has been called to the matter, but there will probably be no need for any very severe measures here, as the tracts do not seem to have excited much attention, and the conduct of the people in their treatment of foreigners is no worse than for months past, which is to say that the people in the main are very well disposed. An act of vandalism was, however, committed a few days ago at the foreign cemetery here. The gate was broken down and one of the graves disturbed. The perpetrators of this outrage are supposed to be some soldiers engaged in repairing the city wall near by. As a coincidence it may be men- toned that these men also are from Hunan.

It is possible that copies of the tracts will be sent to the American Minister at Peking with the request that the attention of the government be called to the existence of this society in Hunan and the character and extent of its operations.

A telegram received at the Foreign Office here intimates that the Crarevitch will visit Nanking on his trip up the Yangsize. This may discredit the opinion advanced by the Chinese Times that His Highness is unwilling to accept a Provincial reception, but the information comes at any rate directly from the office for Foreign Affairs.-N. C. Daily News.

TIENTSIN.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDINT.)

fgth March, 189r.

A quiet, and in general a pleasant winter has has become a thing of the past. It was short and milder than usual, which was well for the poor fooded people all about. After about two weeks of mild sunny weather, we had a regular #bilzzard" on the gib, a high, sharp wind blowing all day, and the snow flying in all directions. It was the heaviest snowfall Tientsin has seen in two or three 'winters. It is all gone now, and to-day the clouds have the appearance of more falling weather. The snow has cleared the atmosphere, and temporarily done away with the terrible smells all about since the ice melted, Sanitally it has been of great value.

Now that the ice is gone, the Relief Committee

has to continue its operations under more

The inland business along the water ways appears to be opening as briskly as the flood and famine conditions of the last few months will permit..... It is stimulated by the promise of a fine wheat crop on all the lands that were relieved of water in time for the planting of wheat last autumn. From all diectians," the report is that the young wheat is strong and flourishing. Not a little spring wheat is being planted where the ground is sufficiently dry to perzeit. it.

We are very sorry to learn from the last issue of the Chinese Timer: that ita career is ended. This is, I am sure, the feeling of the entire commmity. Even those who have differed most widely from some of its utterances, unlie in this expression. It met a mood, and it has made for itself a place which will too soon become an “aching roid." We sincerely hope that it may be resuscitated, under moro lavques able conditions if it be possible.

There appears to be some reason to hope that the steamers will be able to continue their sits on the river at lesat for a time. It is said that the new channel into the gulf found last year is deepening, and gives promise of affording good entrance into the river, much better than the pas heretofore followed across the bar N.
