THE officera and crew of the steamship Strath- endrick, which foundered after collision with the Devoukural off Sourabaya, a short time since, arrived at Singapore on the roth ulto, by the Dutch steamer Sri Bandjar, and are at present staying at the Sailors' Home at that place. THE Hyogo Newer learns from a private source that the Strathears has not been lost after all. She ran short of coal on the trip acroia, and after burning everything combustible on board, had to resort to sailing powers, and arrived at San Francisco in four months. Provisions must have been scarce by the time she passed through the Golden Gate.
THE China Merchants' steamer Kiangkwan, after having undergone a thorough overhaul by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company, resumed running between here and Canton Last Tuesday. Her pilgrimage, so far, has not been a profitable one, and consequently the rates for the Chinese deck passengers have been raised to twenty cents and for the Chinese saloon to fifty cents.
LATEST reports from Acheen state that the fighting between the Dutch and Achinese troops was ranewed on the roth and 11th ulto. and that the losses of the latter were very heavy. The Dutch had four men killed and fourteen wounded, all of whom were non-commissioned officers and privates. The Achinese offered a stubborn resistance and fought with con- siderable bravery considering the nature of their arms. Further fighting is expected.

H.M.S. Alacrity, Commander C, H. Adair, arrived this afternoon (28th alto.) from Manila, with Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick. W. Richards, the new Commander-in-chief ofthe China Station, en board. The Mercury, Commander C. Risifour, also arrived here this afternoon from Manila.
IT is expected that the new Chinese-owned steamer Tat-on, specially constructed for the night service between here and Canton, will make ber maiden trip during the course of the coming week. She is a smart-looking little craft, with capital accommodation for native passengers, and will doubliess prove a public convenience on the river. Whether she will pay her owners or not, is quite another question, But that is of little moment in these days of universal philanthropy.
THE steamship Nansing, stranded on the Lema Islands, has become a total wreck and will prob- ably be put up for auction at an early date, Some two thousand bales of hemp have been salved, but the rest of the cargo, consisting chiefly of sugar, has been lost. Salving opera- tions on the Wawring have been suspended tince Thursday last, when she was virtually abandoned, and she now lies at the mercy of the wind and waves, The Marine Court of Inquiry la con- nection with the loss of the vessel will, in all nrobability, be held next Friday or Saturday, The Union Insurance Society of Canton and the China Traders' are, we understand, the com- panles principally interested in the less, THE Alice Memorial Hospital is in need of financial assistance, and its Committee appeals to the Hongkong community, This institution

He cited the Indo- China Co. as a case in point, and contended that the way in which that company's necounts were kept was the correct, ane; namely, to deduct a certain sum from the cost of each steamer and enter it in the Depreciation Account.
The Chairman said he was very glad to hear what Mr. Cex had to say an the subject, but he thought that his suggestions were, covered by the special resolutions which were before the meeting. The General Managers would, under. the proposed amended rules, be able to write off what they thought fit.

At gunfire the Club had totalled 303 for the loss of 9 wickets, Sercombe Smith being not out with 37 to his credit, and Barff with 4.
speaking for myself I think if the powers of the executive were enlarged so that rendition to the Chinese authorities of native criminals, not poli tical, might be made easier and less expensive than at present we should do much, not only to rid the colony of a class of inhabitants that are a danger to the community, but we should also save very considerable expense, and I think some system butely could be devised that would enable us to weed out these bad characters without trenching on the liberties of bond fide residents On resuming play this forenoon the "not outs" and the good and true men of the Colony. I may say precautions taken by shipowners are all every well up to a certain point, but there are limits to such pro- cautions, and when you get beyond these limits you cannot depend upon any effective remedy being applied by the shipowner.'
From the foregoing it is clear that the Com mittee of the Chamber have given a good deal of thought to the subject of the suppression of piracy, with the result that they have hit upon a very happy kind of half-and-half measure, namely to enable us to weed out bad characters (native criminals), without trespassing on the ilbertles of bond fide residents of the Colony, by means of making the rendition of Chinese to their authorities leas troublesons and expensive than It is at present. The Chairman then, after some further discus-0. sion in which Mr. Gomes contended that it would be better to let the matter stand over, and let two of the Directors and one or two of the shareholders go over the Articles of Association with a view to suggesting such amendments as might be advisable and suitable to the times, asked Mr. Gomes whether anyone would second his resolution?
Mr. Gomes-1-don't know (laughter),
No one seconded Mr. Gomes' proposition, and after a brief lull in the proceedings the Chairman pointed out that shareholders had had fully three werks to think over the resolutions and that, therefore, they should bave writen about it to the Committee prior to the hour of meeting,
Mr. Gomes asked whether Capt. Talbot bad written on the subject and, if so, whether the Chairman would read the letter?
The Chairman said he had, received a letter from Captain Talbot and replied to it at once. The letter was not by him at the moment, but

REFERRING to the death of an old Hongkong hand, a San Francisco shipping contemporary remarks:-Captain H. G. Deathorn, the well. known steamship commander, died at Tacoma on February 19th. He was born in Maine in 1837, and first commanded the clipper sale Wizard, on the Atlantic, and then ran the steamer Lee, from New York to Charleston, In 1867 he entered theemploy of the Pacific Mail Company as first officer. He commanded its Reamers, the Nevada, Oregonian, China, Colorado and Great Republie, old aldo-wheelers on the China route. The iron steamers City of Sydney and City of Paking were also under Captain Dearborn's charge until in 1888 when he retired from the Mall company's service. The Captain was well known hére, and was R general favorite with all who came in contact with him. He was an experienced navigator and shipmaster, and at the time of his death was surveyor for the San Francisco, underwriters at Tacoma. He left a widow, one son and two daughters,

I may say that our idea is for the future to devote a portion of the rums yearly set aside to writing down book values of steamers &c., and the remaining portion to angmenting the Reserve; this is a proposal which I think will meet with your approval. It will be seen that the new Articles will grant increased powers for the disposal or use of the Reserve in case of necessity. At present
