It is expected that the new Chinese-owned | steamer Tatam, specially constructed for the night service between here and Canton, will make her maiden trip during the course of the coming week, She is a smart-looking little craft, with capital accommodation for native passengers, and will doubtless prove a public convenience on the river. Whether she will pay her owners or not, is quite another question, But that is of little moment in these days of universal philanthropy.

THE colony has rarely, if ever, been in a more depressed state than at present. Complaints are heard on every side as to the tightness of money, the slackness and unremunerative character of trade, and the general bust-up" condition of everybody and everything. THE steamship Nansing, stranded on the Lema islands, has become a total wreck and will prob- ably be put up for auction at an early date. Some two thousand bales of hemp have been nlved, but the rest of the cargo, consisting
chicfly of sugar, bar been lost. Saiving opera- tions on the Nansing have been suspended since Thursday last, when she was virtually abandoned, and she now lies at the mercy of the wind and waves. The Marine Court of Ingalry in con- nection with the loss of the vessel will, in all probability, be heid next Friday or Saturday. The Union Insurance Society of Canton and the China Traders' are, we understand, the com panics principally interested in the loss.
GEORGE SADLER, the unfortunate man who has been held up to the execration of the world Jack-the-Ripper" by the thick-headed blundering of the London police, joined the Hongkong Force in March, 1873. He came out with a batch of rgconstables from London, some of whom are still holding responsible positions in the colony. Sadler, who was always assumed by his comrades, to be a bit "off colour," was discharged on a medical certificate in January 1876, and on his return to London rejoined the Metropolitan Police. He afterwards went several voyages to sea, and then attained world-wide notoriety as the most dastardly butcher of modern times, although an entirely innocent man. Poor old Sadler! Grand old British Justice!
THE DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP COMPANY, LIMITED.
· An extraordinary general meeting of share holders in the above named Company was held at the Company's office at noont day, when the following special resolutions were submitted for approval
That in the 5th paragraph of Article XI. of these presents there be inserted the words "and they shall" between the words "whenever they think fit" and the words "upon a Requisi-
tlon,"
Mr. J. H. Cox, who said he spoke as one with a good deal of knowledge of book-keeping, held that "a sum equal to eight per cent upon the book value (less the amount of the Depreciation or Reserve vessels, bulks, launches, lighters, lands, plant, machinery, and other real and personal property, chattels and effects for the time being, and every such sum so set apart" should not, as was pro- posed, "be accumulated as a Depreciation or Reserve Fund, and he invested in or upon any of the public stocks, or funds, or Government securities of the United Kingdom, or India, or the Colony of Hongkong, or any other colony. or any dependency of the United Kingdom" He thought it should not be so dealt with but that, on the contrary, a certain percentage should be written off the cost price of each vessel and sa appear in the accounts. He cited the Indo- China Co. as a case in point, and contended that the way in which that company's account, were kept was the correct one; namely, to deduct a certain sam from the cost of each steamer and enter it in the Depreciation Account,
The Chairman said he was very glad to bear what Mr. Cox had to say an the subject, but be thought that his suggestions were covered by the special resolutions which were before the meeting. The General Managers would, under the proposed amended rules, be able to write of
Mr. Cox-Yes, but it gives you power to relain/ the amount so written off.
2. That the words "for the full value thereof" | what they thought fit, contained in the third line of the 1st paragraph of Article XVIII of these presents be cancelled, and that there be substituted therefor the following: for the actual value thereof for the time being (such value to be from time to time determined by the General Managers with the approval of the Consulting Committee),"
3-That the bend note and paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article XIX. of these prevents, together with the marginal notes of those paragraphs, be cancelled, and that there he substituted therefor the following -
•
DEPRECIATION OR RESERVE FUND AND DIVIDENDS. XIX---The General Managers may (but it shall not be compulsory on them so to do) out of the net annual profits of the Company set apart in any year a sum equal to eight per cent, upon the book value (less the amount of the herein. after mentioned Depredation or Reserve Fund for the time belog) of the Company's vessels, hulks, launches, lighters, lands, plant, machis nery, and other real and personal and chattels and effects for the time being, and every sich sum so set apart shall be accumu lated as a Depreciation or Reserve Fund, and shall be invested in or upon any of the public stocks, or funds, or Government securities of the United Kingdom, or India, or the Colony of Hongkong, or any other Colony, or any Depen dency of the United Kingdom, or in or upon freehold, copyhold, leasehold or chattel real secu rities in the United Kingdom, or India, or the Colony of Hongkong, or any other Colony, or any Dependency of the United Kingdom, or la or upon deposit account with any banking Com pany, body or Corporation having its head or

The Chairman-Yes, but that is optional. Mr. J. H. Cox-1, and I think other share- holders also, would prefer that it was compulsory.
The Chaliman-We have no power to alter these resolutions. If shareholders want pass them, then the proposed amendments will 'bave to be held over for four or five weeks until another meeting is convened
Mr. J. H. Cox-I propose that resolution 3 do not pres in Its presest form. The amount writ ten off should go to the debit of Profit and Loss
account,
Mr. F. A. Gomes-There is another point for
objection. I don't think the Reserve Frads should be invested outside the Colony.
The Chairman-We have no intention of doing so. The Committee will have very great pleasure in scratching out the part you take exception to if the shareholders wish it? good (I mean the part Mr. Gomes objects to), Mr. Veitch-I think that part of the clause is
and should not be struck out.
The Chaliman then, after some further discus. sion in which Mr. Gomes contended that it would be better to let the matter stand over, and let two of the Directors and ons or two of the shareholders go over the Articles of Association with a view to suggesting such amendments ss. asked Mr. Gomes whether anyone would second might be advisable and suitable to the times, bla resolation?
Mr. Gomes-I don't know (laughter),
No one seconded Mr. Gomes proposition, and aftera brief luli In the proceedings the Chairman pointed out that shareholders had had fully threw weeks to think over the resolutions and that, therefore, they should have written about it to the Committee prior to the bour of meeting.
