THE CHINESE CLERK.

The essential point of difference between the life of the Chinese mercantile clerk and that of his European confrère is that he lives on the business pretnises. He usually has leave to return home to visit his wife and family about three times a month, on which occasions he stops away a day and night. The rest of his life is with the exception of occasional outings on business affairs, or to attend marriages, funerals or other functions, spent entirely in the "general" office with his fellow-clerks.
