Half the elty was under water and the houses are being washed away by scores. In the west end of the elty three blocks have been reduced to ruins, and the number of victims in miready stated to

In the East End a similar state of things is recorded, Houses are falling, owing to the foundations being wenkened by water.
In the meantime the most terrible panic pre valls. The air is filled with the shricks of terrified women and children, and people are seen running madly out of the city.
At II o'clock on Friday night the authorliles observed, that the inundation was taking place, It being supposed that the dyke had given way, The police immediately began firing their rides to awaken the population and apprise them of the approaching danger.
The people thought at first that a revolution had broken out, but soon the waters begna to spread and rise. The panic then began, and, what made matters worse, the whole city was steeped in darkness owing to the gas factory having been inundated,
Up to n late bour no further news was received, it being supposed that the telegraph offices must have been washed away. The damages are estimated at over $3,000,000, and more than 150 persons have lost their lives.
NEWTORT, February 12th.
The second night's sale of the Seney collection ́attracted another large crowd. The Melisonier offered, brought $15,000, some thousands more than its price at the Secretan sale, and was bought by James Graham. The picture was an extremely interesting one and was exhibited at Paris among "A Hundred Masterpieces." It was received with appl-use by the spectators.
