are that in the sailer vernacular of a quarter or kalf a century ago there were only four recog nized races in Continental Europe-Frenchmen, Russians, "Dutchmen" and "Dagor." The terms Frenchmen and Russians 'were applied to those respective peoples. Dopos were the Portuguese and all the Mediterranean peoples except the French, and "Dutchmen" comprised the rest of Europeans. Englishmen, Par Bo Scola, Irish and Americans were "white men." No doubt the term "Daco" was corrupted from the common 5,aulsh name "Diego."

THERE has been a good deal of "shifting " in connection with the Police Force of late. The latest move is that of Inspector Gauld from the Inspector Perry, an old Scotland Yard man, who has faithfully served this Government for upwards of 18 years, has tendered his resignation on the grounds of ill-health, and expects to quit these shores by the next English homeward bound mail steamer.
THE result of the meeting held last evening, by those gentlemen desirous of founding a City Club, wasthat the Club has been established under most encouraging auspices, and will be formally opened to-morrow evening at 5pm. In the pre- mises lately known as the Masonic Club, Full provision has been made for all the usual amusements and recreations carried an in Eastern clubs, and under proper management we feel sure that there is a most prosperous career before this well deserving and highly desirable institution. We wish it all success.
COLUMBIA College we read, in the richest institu- tion of the kind in existence. Its fanded estate lacludes about twenty acres of the best part of New York city, the value being now $10,000,000, with a prospect of doubling during the next decade. Hence the Fayerweather bequest of $300,000 is a superfluity, and bad the benevolent merchant known the facts he would not have included Columbla in the list of his beneficiaries.
Everybody exclaims at the absurdity of loading such an institution with money, but this is only one of the curious inconsistencies in the distribution of wealth,
