LIBEL CASE.

It is with the livelient satisfaction that wo wad of the triumph of our contemporary the Straits. Independent in the vexatious libel suis recently iniluted scainst that journal, and

which has completely collapsed when exposed to the common sense and impartial judgment of a British fury.

It is the first, chief and most important duty of the press to open the eyes of the community beyond the actual sphere in which each individual moves,, and by so doing to form that body of opinion, disinterested and just,, which is so fatal to all acts of bribery, botchery and corruption In governing bodies.

It has ever been the praid boast of the British res that it is fearless, outspoken and independent in the discharge of this duty; that wherever corruption, injustice or oporession has reared its head, the press has ever done its duly well and nobly, never resting until the monster is driven to its lair, baffled and impotent. In the performance of its duty, that "'em daughter of the voice of God," it is neither a respecter of individuals nor stations; as long as vice remains to be checked or the power, which was riven for the benefit of the masses is directed to the selfish ends of the individual, the press will ever act's the fearless exponent of public polning in demanding the abolition of the injustice and the the punishment of the offender.

The position of an elitry in the East is a difficult and onerous one. He is hemmed in by many disadvantages unknown, to his European brother. Not only has he to cope with the Ignorance of the native population, whose battles he is constantly engaged in waging; but be is olten Inoked upon with suspicions and dislike by that class of Europeans who have everything to gain from the semi-barburaux state of the people Even the European officials in states where they are subject to native orders as a rale, look askance at him, disliking and resealing that necessary criticism which often disturbs the even tenor of their way,
