To Captain Samuel Ashton. President of the British Mercantile Marine Officers' Asocin- tion (Hongkong). Associate of the Institute of Naval Architects (Great Britain), Member of the Mercantile Marine Service Association (Liverpool) Commodore of the Douglas Steamship Line (Hongkong), &c., &c. SIR-We have the honëur and pleasure of ap oching you to-day for the purpose of asking the favour of your acceptance of the accompany ing silke flag, which we hand to you as a humble taken of our gratitude for the great services which you have rendered to this young Associa- ton and to the profession generally. We also sak, you to regard it as a mask of our esteem, and the pride we feel in having you as our President. We are fully cognisant that the manly and un. selfish stand which you have taken in our behalf and in the interests of the British Merchant Service has been attended with no insignificant amount of risk to your popularity in society generally outside the sphere of your profession, And with risk, too, of personal loss. But you have doubtless counted the cost and arrived at the conclusion, we opin, that the course you this association in June last was justified by your were purning when accepting the presidency of keen sense of daty to your country, your pro fession and, Instly, to yourself. Believing this, we filos to find language wherein to express our gratitude and our unbounded admiration for chewhose actinos entitle him to rank amongst the noble mea of the age.
We thank you in our own behalf, and for those who are unavoidably absent to-day, for all that you have done and are now doing for us, and we trust you may long be spared to adorn the proceedings of this. Society, and we hope, too, that the blessing of God will rest upon your efforts to obtain for us, not only the right of rest when in this post on Sunday but also the recogni- tion of the members of the British Merchant Service as one of the most important sections of the world's communities; and, further, the revision of the laws governing the British Mercantile Marine, which are, admittedly, very unsuitable to the age in which we live.
That your enemies may be confounded, that success may attend all your public and private undertakings, and that your life will be a long and happy one is the earnest wish of the members of this association."} (Hera follow the signatures of the Treasurer,

which, added to the circumstance that the residence of Man Lau Yung was near mine, made me suspect the possibility of his being hidden, about the hill, and that the movement displayed had for its object not only communica tion with his family, but also to get information of the police plans for his apprehension.
