A great snowstorm has occurred in Soochow to the joy of the inhabitants.

A few nights nga a Chinese match factory out. side the west gate of Shanghai was set on file by some persons drying match sticks over a coal fire, Four houses were burnt down, and it was lucky that the high fire walls around the factory prevented the flames from spreading.

A small steam launch on its way to Soochow the other day collided with a rice boat. The collielen happened so unexpectedly and with uch force that the engineer of the launch and safor in the rice boat fell overboard and were drowned. Both sides claim damages and com- pensation for a life lost. The case is before the City magistrate for trial.

During the ceremonies performed at the burial of Peng Yü-lin, a young man wearing deep mourning attempted to force an entrance to the funeral hall and pay his respects to the deceased Ratesman. He was, however, prevented by the doorkeepers, and ex his showing violence was arrested and taken to the city lock-up. After a while placards appeared stating that the young man was crazy. When Peng was alive the young man called on him reveatedly, and when ke died the same young man took a sheep and slaughtered it before the shrine, weeping-cop!- susly without uttering a word. As to who he is and what were his latentiontin forcing himself to the side of Pêng's ceffin, whether actually to pay respects or otle wise, no one has yet formed any correct idea.

It is a curious fact how the town of Twatutia is growing, with whole new streets, rows of brick- built houses, and even hunding along the river, A whole black of godowns is built Just behind the fine new building which is destined for a rallway station when it is finished. The worst is that nearly all the European dwellings are

the streets are very diny, although broad and level. They have also a lot of mosquitoes all the year sound in Twawia, a plague that we know very little of in Kelung. A couple of years ago there was not a single lady in Twatutin; now quite a number of families live there and I hear that more are coming.

Where there is a demand there will be a supply, and as before long there must be a demand for A good many things at present not existing in this our pretty but very primitive Kelung, I hope to ste his demand supplied. The Chinese seldom think ahead; they build the rallway sta- tions after the lines are opened for traffic, and they dislike innovations until they see that they can- not do without them. The Governor wishes to make Kelung a good port, and in spité of all obstacles at present, it must of necessity be so when first the trains ran regularly, and connect so rich a country and so my cities with the only decent harbour in all Formosa, excepling Makong in the Pescadores, and it is of very little ue for trade.

ye!

There is said to be a well organised band of robbers near Kelung; the old Kelung Ting goes round at night himself with patrol in the city to try to catch them at work. I don't think we need trouble our minds about them, but we keep our shooting gear in good order and have it handy if an occasion should come for using any thing of the kind,

A rumour says that the 'able manager of the Formosa Trading Co., Mr. Tani Ying Wal, who has been to Hongkong lately, has succeeded in arranging to start the new coal mines at Wang Wang, and we hope he will get permission to do so. It is also said that the Formosa Trading Co, will acquire two new steamers to develop the trade-Shangkat Mercury.

A few days ago a very good proclamation was issued by the magistrate, telling of the punish- ment of the men who raised a riot nearly two years ago at the house of the Rev. F. Harmon, enjoining peace in the future, and stating the right of foreigners to reat and possess property. It would thes seem that missionaries, not withstanding the sudden outbursts of lawlessness that now and then arise to opposition to their work, are all the time making a steady advance in the recognition of their rights both as foreigners and teachers of Christianity. Both sides need to be observed, if an accurate description were to be given of the present status of missionary work in Western Shantung.-N. C. Daily News.
