ANOTHER KIDNAPPING CASE,

THE HOUSE OF A EUROPEAN USED AS A

BARRACOON.

Yu Akuk, mother of the kidnapped child, said she missed her daughter at midnight on the Ist instant and at once made a report to the police. This witness fully corroborated her daughter's statement as to the kidnapping.

For the defence the prisoners stated that the girl came to them voluntarily and said she would Father kill herself than go bick to her mother.

Li Yung, recalled, said-My mother does not beat me. I was 14 years old on the itst of

January of this year.

At this juncture the further hearing was remanded until Wednesday next, the ith instant. As soon as the case was over Mr. Legge's "boy" was charged with stealing a dog-collar, valued at $1, from his master. The charge, however, had not been proceeded with when our reporter left the court.

SPORTING NOTES,

Great things were expected from this morning's gallops, but we doubt if anyone is now much witer after having seen 'what they did nee,' and the revelations from which so many ardent bickers of their own and other particular fancies fondly hoped to see a straight track in front of them, are only of nominal

I accordingly went to har honse in New West Street and asked her what the wanted. I sat down for about five minutes and she then took me to the first defendant's room in the same house. The second defendant is known as "the Dwarf." After being there for Httle while the first defendani said she would take me to a house to get something. I understand her to mean that she would give me something. She took me to a European house up the hill and there out me lato a room by myself, on the basement floor. I was kent in the room for three days. During the day-time 1 was locked up in the room alone. At night a man and a woman occupled the room with me. It was about midnight when I first arrived there, A min and woman were in the room, and the Grat defendant had to knock at the door, ak those inside were already asleep. DEATH OF THE KING OF HAWAII.

King David Kalakaua, who died at San Francisco on the 21st ultimo, while' on a pleasure trip to the United States, was born in 1836 and was proclaimed King of Hawail in 1874, on the death of Lunalilo. Dying as did his predecessor, without children, the successor to the throne is his

eldest sister, now Queen, Litioukalani, who was

born in 1838 and is married to Mr. J. O. Dorainis, Governor of Oahu. The deceased monarch was visited Japan, China and Hongkong in 1881, in fond of travelling and, it will be remembered, the course of a tour round.the world. Although a man of good physique, Kalakaus could not boast of a robust constitution, and it is more than likely that the severe winter prevailing in the worthern states of America, which he visited recently, brought on an attack of pneumonia from which he never rilled. During the 16 years that he has reigned over the Sandwich Islands, much progress has been made in commerce and civiliza tion, and a new Constitution was granted to his subjects about three years ago. There are now two Hauses of Puliment, styled the House of Nobles and the House of Representatives, each consisting of 24 members elected by the popular vote; the Nobles holding office for six and the Representatives for two years. The Houses sit together and form the Legislative Assembly. The members of the Privy Council, however, are appointed by the reigning monarch.

Sime time ago there was a childish ramour aflat relative to the purchase by Great Britain of one of the islands, which comprise the Hawallan group. It is far more likely, although not probable, that the whole group will event- ually be annexed by the United States, with which country the bulk of its trade is carried on. How

SCIENTIFIC HORSE-SHOEING.

The following very sensible remarks on the above subject appeared solae considerable time since in a letter to a leading English paper from Farler Quarter-Master Sergeant J. Calderwood, of the 18th Hussars-and they are well worthy the attention of all who take an interest in horses

When shall we be able to get our horses shod on scientific principles ? When shall we be able to get par horses shod without the outside of their honfs being destroyed by the rasp, or their holes thinned with the knife? Such are the questions put to as by various horse-owners. We Cannot get our horsee shod without this rasping for love of money, unless we are lucky enough to be near a barracks or military station where we can get them shod by ཀྵ military farrier. Here the question occurs to me, if military farriers can shoe without rasping, sole-pairing, etc., why not civilian farriers also? Why should horse-shoeing remain a certury behind the times, instend of embracing every improvement, the same as other trades? Where does the fault lie? We have works on practical horse-shoeing written by some of the most eminent veterinary autho- rities of the present day, but horse-shoers do not care to peruse wwks relative to their trade. They think they know enough about it when they have served their apprenticeship. Strange tony, thousands of Lorse-shoers serve an apprenticeship of seven years to their trade with out even seeing the inside of a dead foot.
