THE GERMAN ARMY.

As to the projected Bangkok-Korat railway, the Bangkok Times learns from an authoristive source that sinre'ne contracts have na yet been completed with any of the several railway con- tractors now in Slam, and as it must necessarily take another month or two before their tenders can be prepared and sent in,-Government has decided to postpone the ceremony of turning the first and untli early in April next (the Siamese New Year), when it is expected that all the con- tracts for the work will have been given out. THE magistrate was down on one Chan Kwal this morning. Chao was charged with pillering a brass hinge, worth 40 cents. He admitted the offence as well as two previous convictions for larceny. Mr. Wise passed a sentence of riz months' hard labour,-the beginning of which he must undergo by enduring fourteen for the last three weeks of his incarceration. We would direct the attention of the Governor to the folly, of forcing a man to become a criminal for such a paltry offence.

Count Waldersee, chlaf of the General Staff [days solitary and "ditto" of the German Army, has resigned.

Tax Morning Post thus concludes an article on tea :-Though China has been beaten back from the commanding position li formerly occupied in the British tea markets, it most not be inferred that the total tea trade of the Empire has suffered in anything like the same proportion. It has declined, but the decline since 1886 has been only a little over 12 per cent. In quantity, and about y per cent. in value. It would be altogether prematurs, therefore, to assume, as some rasbly have, that China in on the point of losing her foreign tea trade. Russia, so eminently conservative in its preference for certain grades of tea, is beginning to take kindly to the Indian leaf, but there are still many countries, such as the United States, where people evince a strong objection to any but the genuine growths of the Flowery Land. Still, when a comparatively small island like Caylon can also and export in a single year over forty million pounds of tea, it is evident that the Chtaess cultivatorn will have to bestir themselves pretty actively, if they are to hold their own in those markets they still centrive to monopolise.

MR. D. V. Morgan writes to The Timer on the fact that the Naval Construction Company of Barrow had entered into a contract with the Canadias Gorgmaant for a fast line of steamers from England to Canada, and that another contrast is likely to be completed for a fast line between Vancouver and Australasia. Ha says i turkis in news of Imperial Importance, and mens that is a few months people will be able to travel from England to Japan in three weeki. The mails to China, as well as to Japan, will in faturn go via Canada instead of as at present (chiefy) by the Spas Canst. At present the contract between the United Kingdom, Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway is for monthly steamer from Vancouver to Japan and Chlaa ; alandy it is found three steamers in two months are needed for the trade, and after the arrival of the new boats there will be sufficient business for a fortnightly boat. When the new quick boats commence to run from England to Canada thers will, I am confident, be sufficient freight and passengers to make a weekly line to the Far East necessary,

THE HONGKONG & KOWLOON WHARF AND GODOWN COM- PANY, LIMITED.

The following is the report for presentation to shareholders at the fourth ordinary annual meeting, to be held at the Chamber of Commerce Room, City Hall, at 12 o'clock (noon), on Satur day, the 7th day of February, 1891-

The Directors have now to submit to share holders their Report, with a Statement of Ac- counts for the year ending 31st December, 1895,

ACCOUNTS.

for the year, and to cany forward the balance of $2.585.92 to next account.

Profit and Loss has debited with $4675:37. being the amount of disputed and unrecoverable debts for 1B87 and 1888, and the laterest as money borrowed to return to shareholders in conse quence of the reduction of capital has also been passed to this account. But for the unavoid. able delay in carrying out the work of Reclama- tion, a large portion of land already sold would have now been paid for, and the Directors consider the profits derived from the Reclamation should be charged with the interest incurred through the delay. The account therefore stands with a credit balance of $341,886.99, a large portion of which it is expected will be received during the present year.

The Directors are pleased to state that after considerable difficulty they have succeeded in concentrating the whole of the ocean-going traffic at Kowloob, reserving West Point for coasting vessels only, and this will result in fasther considerable economy of working during the current year.

Three new coal gedowns are in course of completion at Kowloon, and it will shortly be come necessary to enlarge the accomodation for cargo,
