IMPORTANT INTIMATION.

Lag College "As the editor of that journal lives within a few hundred yards of the scene, some reliance was placed in this, more especially as several foreign residents of Tokyo, who had come down this morning, had no knowledge of the affair, and one gentleman was eyes under- stood to say that the Houses were still standing NOW when he passed this morning. Later, the Jiji issued an extra, confirming the account of the conflagration, and stating that the Diet was to meet temporarily in the Koba-daigakko. Farther information is all'in confirmation of the destruc- tion of the buildings.

The fire was discovered about half-an-hour after midnight, and began in that portion of the buildings devoted to the use of the House of Representatives, at least when our informant reached the scene, shortly before one o'clock, that wing was already doomed. The fire spread across the connecting passages, and in a short time the entire block was a mass of flames. Built,

"THE HONGKONG DIRECTORY"

has again been enlarged and is TKA CHEAPEST, MOST COMPLETE, AND ONLY RELIABLY WORK OF THE KIND PUBLISHED IN. THE FAR EAST.

THE above named work, published at the

Office of "THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,"contains a Directory forthe Ports in the large portion of Asia comprised between

Vorthern: Chinese Ports, including Wladiwostock, Penang, in the Straits Settlements, and the Formosa, the Treaty Ports of China and Japan, Cochin-China, the Philippine Islands, Corea, British North Borneo, the British Colony of Hongkong and the Portuguese Colony of Macao. ala ontains the Principal Treaties between

should they ever catch fire, and this has unfortunately proved to be the case. As to the origin of the fire, various conflicting state- ments are floating about. The official account is that it was caused by the electric light, whilst the Tokyo Shimpo says that it was the work of an incendiary. At the risk of being considered a pessimist by the Fadan Mallt

THE deposed "uncrowned King of Ireland" has evidently bitter animus against this most favored colony. He probably doesn't know it is our fubilee year! However, during the Kilkenny election proceedings Mr. Harrington, M.P., feli foul of the Nationalist candidate, Sir John Pope Hennessy, and sarcastically (and untruthfully) said thai Sir John's only distinction' was an obscure governorship at Hongkong. Hongkong an "obscure" governorship' ma conscience! But Parnell went one better. "Down with Hongkong," muttered Kitty & Shea's fira-escape lover, and then, bringing his hands down on his kuces, be shouted. To bell, with Hongkong." We can't imagine why Parnell should wish to consign this island of fragrant streams to ever lasting flames unless he has been inveigled lato chucking away his money on Punjoms or China Borneos; hut the stern truth nevertheless remains that the great Home Ruler has given it as his hito always hitherto secured perfect sales Spain, and Portugal; together with conditions

that this weigh heavily upon our lingvoly that the latter is the more probable reason. The Japanese have shown themselves great adepts at electricity, and even when fiuing the light to old build lags sever intended for its reception, they

AN Order in Council is published in the Gazette which will have effect in the Far East in altering the style of marriages. In it the Queen declares that for the purposes of section a ei the Marriage

tric light have been used for after midnight? Most of us will be inclined to look upon it as the reply of the sashi to the reissue of the Peace Preservation Regulations, and although this may not be openly admitted by the officials, we should not be surprised if it were correct. The loss will be a severe one to the Goverment, as the buildings, which were very conveniently fitted up, cost them, if we remember correctly, about $175,000.

Since the above was written, an extra from the Mainichi Shimbun has been published, which slates that the official residences of the Chief Secretaries of bath Houses were saved, but most of the iraportant documents of both houses were destroyed. The House of Peers meets to-day in the Rokomei-kas, and the House of Representa- tives at the Koba-daigakko.-Faban Herald.
