IT is to be hoped that somebody's suit will shortly bring the Stanley controversy before the The revelations which now follow each other in rapid succession are extremely unpleasant reading, and settle nothing in the public mind. Who ranks whom, among Stanley's subordinates, as an authority about the rear column, is some. thing the public outside is incompetent to decide, especially as each actor is the affair, from Mr. Stanley down, says he has not yet told all he knows. There are at least three versions now in the field, besides Stanley's own, namely, Troup's, Boaur's, and Tameson's, besides the version of the Barttelot family. The last touch, that Jameson had a girl killed and eaten in order to provide a cannibal scene for a sketch or made during the Burmese war, that the officer photograph, is a slight advance upon a charge in command had had carefully grouped a lot of guerillas condemned to be, shot, so that they might be effectively photographed at the final moment. I went to the defendant, and told him what Mr. Rogge said. He said "all right" and produced the scrip. I copied the numbers. I then went to Mr. Regge and gave him the numbers. I saw him again at one o'clock, whèn he said it was all right. He asked me whether the scrip was standing in the usma of Fung Poi afternoon but could not find him. On Sunday 1 wrote a note to him, telling him that the matter was settled, the shares to be delivered on Monday, I had previously told him the shares were sold, but it is the custom to give a written notice afterwards. I went on Monday to Fung Pol's house to get the shater, but was informed that be had gone to Canton on Sunday evening. He returned on Thursday and I saw him that morn ing, and asked him for the shares. He said, "This morning a broker told me the market has gone up and I won't give you the shares. I have lost too much by them," I said he could not back out of the transaction. He said it was went to the defendant several times to get him only a verbal order. I informed Mr. Rogge to deliver the shares, but he still refased. Os Friday I took him to see Mr. Rogge, who advised bim to give up the shares as they had been sold through, me.. The defondant said although he gave me an order it was not in writing, He took me aside and asked me to tell Me, Rogge that if he could pay $12.50 per share he woud get the shares.
William Wotton (Messrs. Wotton and Deacon) said on the first visit of the defendant and Bär. Rogge to his office the defendant denied the contract and refused to deliver the shares. Nothing was said about the price of the shares- letter that unless the shares were delivered being 88.50. The defendant was notified by before 10.30 am. on the 6th December, 30 shares would be purchased in the market at the current rate and he would be charged with the difference in price. The defendant still refused to deliver the shares, but on the Rth of December he came

ACCORDING to the Government Gazette publish- ed' on Saturday the mortality returns for December last show that there were 368 deaths to Hongkong during that month, of which were Among the British and foreign community and 359 among the Chinese population. The death rate per 1,000 was 143 among the British and foreign community, and 21.7 among the Chinese. A HOME exchange reports a case that is of more than ordinary interest, inasmuch as it gives another instance of the rottennent of common law as administered by the ordinary J. Ps. in spectacle of a Bishop being hauled before a England and elsewhere, and moreover the "private chaplain is enough to make a.
