At the present stane, the progress made in this direction is very slow.

superiority of the twin-screw steamers now lo active service over the single-screw steamers in regard to speed-to say nothing of the gre ter safety to the vessel. How much more superior the new method is to the old onela respect of greater speed remains to be seen. The gain in making an ocean voyage may be said to be only a few minutes better than that performed by the fastest single-screw steamers, It must also be considered that the former are vessels of larger ass which by itself is favourable to an increase of speed. Looked at in this light, therefore, is the twin-screw steamer the faster boat by reason of, the num-. ber of its propellers or because of its greater site? And would not the same vessel develop the same speed with but a zingle screw? Even if this should prove true there are possibilities opened up by the adoption of the system of multiplying the number of propellers with a view to gaining speed which did not present them- selves in the single screw. In one or more of the new naval vessels our Government is about to build three propellers are to be Nagisaki adopted, and the result, so far as it is possibichanghai", to estimate it beforehand, is expected to prove exceptionally good. It is therefore just possible that the limit of effectiveness of screw propellers is not reached in two, not yet by three propellers, and the future may yet'add a fouth one to the fast-going ocean steamer. It is evident that a great deal of thought will be given this subject with a view to increased speed simply, and many experiments will follow upon it. So far the saving of time in making an ocean voyage, has been accomplished only at great expense for every additional kaot of increased speed. It is to be hoped that the development of this method will lead to saving of expense and to substantial results as to speed, and that instead of a gain of a few minutes only. It may soon rise to the dignity of hours, which indeed indicate great progress in record making by ocean steamers, and an endorsement as well of the wisdom of adopting multiple screw system.-New York Maritime Registerö
