of Trade. Several large lots of land, ranging from 500 to 17,000 square feet per lot, were knocked down at the first sales at an average price of sight pence per square foot.

In the next chapter we shall give some parti. culars of the war spirit prevailing amongst the Chinese shortly after her occupation of this Island, "War against Queen Victoria and her rebellious (England being considered by the Chinese, at that time, as a tributary State, the ward rebel was applied by our Celestial enemies with more or less reason subjects, is to be waged without mercy, at all points, and by all means" was the decree that went forth from the one man occuping the Dragon Throne.

WOMEN IN TURKEY.

Hitherto our information regarding the con- dition of women in the various countries com- posing the Ottoman Empire has been vague and fragmentary, collectible only from casual allusions dispersed through a multkade of books of travel. So carefully is the femlilae kalf of the human race secluded from observation throughout most of the Sultan's dominions that the majority ofale travellers in Turkey might acknowledge, with the Rev. Mr. Tozer, that "in all our journey the female sex may be said not to have existed for us at all" The researches, on the other hand, al female travellers would encounter no obstruction, and since Lady Mary Wartley Montagu was allowed to visit the Sul- tan's semglio ft has been evident that we muit look to them for all the knowledge obtainable about the treatment of women in the wide and diversified regions governed by the Forte.

It was not, however, until Miss Lucy M. J. Garnett devoted eight years to a study of the subject at first hand that the materials were forthcoming for a minute, systematic and trust- worthy account of the social position, domestic life and folk-lore of the women of Turkey. The outcome af beri-quiries is now in the course of publication in London, a first volume devoted to the women of the Christian peoples subject to the Sultam baving just been lisued. The women who are here vividly depicted belong, of course, to divers races, Including Greeks, Bulgarians, Armenians, Viachs or Wallachs, and the so-called Franks, who, for the most part, have descended from Venetian and Genosse merchants, who settled in the Levant during the Middle Ages.

of two types, the Tartar and the Slavo-Greek. The former type is distinguished by high cheek bones, bread, flat face, small, sunken eyes, nose fit at the top and inclined to be globular at the end, eye-brows thick and prominent, and a dark complexion. The other type resembles in its general characteristics the rest of the mixed Christian population of European Turkey, and some of the women are said to be extremely pretty. So far as the town folk are concerned, the babitations and modes of life differ in no way from those of the 'Gréck, and as the religion, the marriage law, and surrounding (circumstances are the same, the social status of women in towns is identical. There is very tle social intercourse, however, between the Bulgarians and their Greek neighbors, each na tionality keeping exclusively to its own circle, a practice which naturally narrows the ideas of the women.

|

On the other hand, the Bulgarian women of the peasant class, having no opportunity for copying the dress and manners of more civilized people, adhere rigidly to their national customs. They have, moreover, a more independent position and a freer life than the generally of Greek peasant women. The Bulgarian women take an equal share with the men of the family in field and farm work, and so have coms to be on à footing of equality with their husbands and brothers. They alto marry much later in life ban most Orientals, and, subject to the approval of their fathers, select their husbands. The youth who would transfer the services of a Bulgarian peasant woman from her father, to himself has to pay an equivalent in money. As he himself, however, remains associated with his father on the paternal farm, the wife has prac tically to work for her father-in-law.

The clothing of the peasant women is warm and comfortabls for winter' wear, but would be intolerably hot and heavy in summer. Only tho sturdy frame of a Bulgarian could easily support the weight of har full gala costume, with all the ponderous silver ornaments worn on bead, neck, waist and wrists. This costume consists of a gown of unbleached linen or cotton, reaching. from the neck to the ankles, and decorated around the borders, and especially on the wide sleeves, with elaborate embroidery and diawa work in fine-colored wools. Over this is worn another gown, similarly decorated, but with- out sleeves and open at the sides; and, over all a sireveless coat of white felt, finely braided in artistic patterns and colors. A assh, several yards long and about two inches in width, is twisted around the waist, and the costume is completed by no apron which is sometimes covered with clabo- Tate needlework. On the head is worn a tiny cap covered with gold and silk braid, from which hangs over the shoulders and below the waist an ample fringe af braided scarlet wool, or gold and black silk; and over the rest of the headdress is thrown a square of white colton, embroidered round the borders with silk, and fastened to the cap with lanemerable silver ornaments and strings of coin. The working dress is of the same patters, but of plainer make and more sober color, and two or three such costumes last a Bulgarian woman from her wedding day to the day of her death. We may add that she usually goes barefoot when about her daily avocations, and puts on shoes and embroidered socks only on great occasions.

Among the Christian women of Turkey the several grounds, particularly Armenians are, interesting. Besides constituting the bulk of the population in the highland country of Armenia proper, the Armenians form large communities in Constantinoplo and Adrianople, at Broussa and Smyrna, and in some of the smaller towns of European Turkey. Among them are to be found two entirely distinct types, t respectively distinguished by the Turks as pure" and

Yet, although marriages are usually made from motives of family convenience, conjugal unhap- piness is very rare, The Greek women make dévoted wives, and the Greek men exemplary husbands. It is noteworthy that in a Greek household the greatest deference is paid by the daughter-in-law to her husband's mother, who always sits at the head of the table.

In repect of education the Armenian wom.co in the large cities above mentioned compare not unfavorably with some Europeans, but in Armenia proper very little attention is paid to the instruction of the female sex. An amiable trait of their character is their kindness to domestic animals, which is pleasantly contrasted with the cruelty displayed toward dumb creatures by their Greek and Jewish neighbours. To kill a cat, a bird, or even a rat, was formerly considered to grave a crime as to deserve ecclesiastical punishment, and in one instance a fast of twenty years' duration was Imposed on an Armenian woman for killing her cat.

Armesian habitations differ widely, according to locality and wealth. The abodes of the rich Armenians on the Bosphorus are palatial edifices replete with European luxuries and comforts, but the dwellings of the peasantry in parts of the Armenian highlands are mere burrows in a hill side. Nowhere in the world is the subjection of the daughter-in-law carried further than in Armenia proper. On being taken home to the house of her husband's father-three or four generations live under one roof-she is made to don a veil of crimson wool which obscures her features. Thenceforward she may not address any of her husband's rola- dons, save those who are her juniors, or even speak to her husband "In his parents' presence, until the patriarch of the fatally gives his per- raission by removing her red veil. This he seldom does until ske bears a son, and, therefore, the scal of silence may not be removed for many years. Whether owing to this discipline or not, the domestic virtues of the Armenian woman are many. She is a faithful wife and an affectionate mother, and her house is a model of cleanliness. HONGKONG, AND SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION,

The reclusion hitherto observed by Greek women in Turkey should apparently be attri- buted to consideration for their safety, living as they do among people of alien race and creed That this is the case seems inferable from the fact that in Smyrna, where the Moslem element is in a minority, this seclusion is a thing of the past. It should also be mentioned that the Greek peasant women, unlike the Vlach and Bulgarian women, are not employed to any great extent in field work, although they take an active part in much of the labor connected with the farm, and their household and dalry duties are onerous. In Roumelia and Macedonls, Indeed, the Greek girls and young married women hire themselves out for the harvest, and assist in the rearing and threshing.
