and I told him that before sending a gunboat it would be well if I could see Mr. McLeavy Brown, who probably knew the locality well and would be able to give me valuable formation. I sent to Mr. McLeavy Brown, and he very kindly came to see me in half an hour's time. I told him what the Commodore had mentioned to me, which facts had come to his knowledga previously. He agreed with me that it would be desirable for a gunboat to go and said that he would ask Copain Stewart to accompany the gunboat, if such would be agreeable to Commodore Church. Captain Stewart, I mey mention, is captain of the Kaijan, a revenue cruiser. I wrote to the Commodore and told him of the offer of Mr. McLeavy Brown, and that Mr. McLeavy Brown would request Captain Stewart to communicate with him, in order that he might go with the gunboat if such was con- sidered desirable. This was about 11 o'clock, for Mr. McLeavy Brown came to me sborty after the Commodore had left. During the course of the afternoon I received information by letter from the Commodore that the Linnet would leave early the next morning. I did not consider it necessary to request Commodore Church to send a gunboat at any particulaf

naval authorities, and if I am to blame to `any extent it is that I did not request the naval authorities to send the Zinnet at any particular time. That did not strike me as being a part of my duty. I thought the request that the gunboat should go at a particular hour was a matter father for the naval authorities than myself.
