A CORRISPONDENT draws our attention to the fact that, the name of the unfortunate gentle- man about whom so much has been wiliter in connection with the Stanley expedition is Jamelon and not Jamieson as has appeared in the Hongkong papers. THE fleet of the Sultan of Zanzibar does not seein

to le a very formidable affair. It is composed of what were lately private seamers, for the most part small and ancient, armed with guns half-a- century old Etiquette Intely drimanded that these vessels should salute the foreign ships in part, and it is reported to have been a wonderful ordeal. Ultimately with the aid of a red-hot eight to see the native gunners going through the poker, the cannon were discharged at such long and irregular intervals as to seriously diminish the pomp of the proceeding.

Irls understood, says the Kwang Pao, that a -n telerram has been received from Peking relative to the disputed question of Hongkong chartered junks, to the effect that the trade between Hongkong and Canton differs from that between the Treaty ports and that Hongkong junks, whether chartered or not, come under the Dative Customs. The point is not very material, for the duties levied by the native Customs are, aan rule, lighter than those payable under tarif At the foreign Customs, and it in addition to these duties the native Customs here or at Kowloon attempt to levy either lekin or battery tax on foreign-owned goods, whether shipped by junk or foreign vessel, it is so clearly illegal that there can be no doubt it can be successfully

resisted.

Hawk on Sir William C. Robinson thus:-The return of Sir William Cleaver Robinson to Western Australia is being anxiously looked forward to by the calonists, with whom he made himself exceedingly popular during bis previous governorship of the Colony. Both Sir William and his elder brother, Bir Hercules, have got on remarkably well in the Colonial official harness, however, and gone in for bank service. The latter has now thrown off his and company directo ships, for which bis long experience fits bim admirably, During his last governorship at the Cape he is said to have made a pot of moner out of Griquiland diamonds, and if he ever gets a chance to give Cecil Rhodes a friendly kick forward in the direction of a knighthood he is bound to do it. As for the new Governor of the wild Western Colony of Australia, he lives pleasantly on his salary, doing his duty well and truly at all times, and devoting his spare time to musical com position.
