We learn that the principal Chinese junk owners of this colony have drawn up a petition which will be forwarded to his Excellency the Acting Governor this week, protesting against the vexatious and lilegal system of espionage carried on by the Chinese Customs officers in and around the waters of Hongkong. The petition states that junks are frequently boarded by the crews of Chinese Customs launches in British waters, their vessels ransacked, and themselves frequently

The Shanghai Mercury of the 21st inst, gives the following report of a rather extensive fire in that Seillenient-At 11.30 last night a fire broke out in an unoccupied tenement in an alley. way off the Rue du Consulat, near the new French Police Station, and as, owing to its remote situation, the Fire Companies were some time in arriving on the scene, it had spread to the adjoining houses before any effective measures could be taken to check it. Stewart opposed the motion as being- bardly fair to members wishing to `row in the open races, The interest taken in the Regaita was not now centred in one race, and he thought it was better that it should be so. He propored a ao amendment that three nights a week be devoted to training for the Chairman's Cup and the other three nights to the open races—the Ladies' Purse, the Garrison Cup, and the later

national Race.

Mr. A. Denison seconded. -- Capt. Davidson though', as there were five races on the programme open to new members, that was a very fair proportion. With regard to what Mr. Sampson bad said about training, there were other hours open besides those he had mentioned. Every civilian who liked to get out of bed early in the morning could practice between and 8.30 a.m., while there were some members of the Club who, even if they did get out of bed catch other duties to perform which prevented them from training.

The Chairman then put Mr. Stewart's amend ment to the meeting, and it was carried by a large majority., -

Mr. Stephen announced that the Regatta would be held on the 18th and 19th December.
