THE Norddeutscher Lloyd Co's steamer Neckar, Captain Supmer, which arrived here yesterday about 9 o'clock, encountered a typhoon off the Paracels which delayed her about 13 hours, owing to her turning back, and, after getting clear of the typhoon, taking an easterly course for some dis tance to avoid the full force of the hurricane.

October 3rd.
A serious fire broke out in the centre of Sydney. The City Bank, Athenæum, and the premises of six leading firms were gutted. The loss is estimated at £1,500,000.

The directors of the Malay Peninsula Prospect ing Co. meet this afternon to consider, among ather things, the receipt of the 250,000 fully paid up Raub shares. It may be well for the public to note that in connection with these shares there are various questions to adjust. Before the company can allot to the original concessionaires (Mr. Glass and Syed Alsagoff) the large quantity of shares due to them, the company must first obtain payment from them of considerable pro- specting charges and some differences of opinion may arise on these matters. Until these matters are settled the directors can scarcely decide what shares belong to the company or how these may he dealt with."
MR. JAHIS SAMPSON is the latest candidate for Belilios honors. Whilst passing the Harbour Office about noon to-day he saw a woman in the water, and, jumping out of his "ricksha, at once In a few ran along the pier and. dived in. moments he had her landed on the pler-steps, and, assisted by some Europeans who had come up, set about resuscitating her. Dr. Hartigan was telephoned for, and pronounced her out of danger.
When somewhat recovered the poor creature said that she had jumped in to escape the il-treatment of her step-mother. She was removed to the Central Station and thence to the Civil Hospital. She will be charged with attempting to commit suicide. This, we belleve, is the fifth life which Mr. Sampson has saved, and as he already holds the Humane Society's bronze medal he stands every chance of receiving the gold one.

CAPTAIN THOMAS ROY, owner of the Nova Scotian ship Esther Roy, was amongst the passengers, from Vancouver, per Parthia on Saturday. He is on his way to Batavin to attend to the affairs of his ship which, after being stranded on the Two Brothers near Anger Head and there jettisoning about 300 tone of cargo, was hau'ed off by the Netherlands steamship Prinx Alexander and towed into Batavia. The cargo, consisting of kerosene oil for Messrs. Adamson, Bell & Co. of Hongkong, has been landed at Batavia, but will be re-loaded and brought on to Hongkong as soon as the vessel has been sufficiently repaired to enable her to stand the voyage. To add to her misfortunes the Captain of the Esther Roy, has, we hear, fallen seriously
