In the majority of cases the evidence does not go for much; excess of zeal clouds the air of verisimilitude in the witnesses fistrative, and not even the most conscientious and shrewd investigation can determine what percentage of undraped trath there is in the torrent of allegations set forth in the prosecution. This applies pretty, well all round-to the Chinese kong, the Sikh permbulator, and the general Celestial public.

Their favorite weapon is the "le with circumstance," and they generally spike their own battery, flaunting the "whole truth" too wildly. Even the serious injuries of a complainant are looked upon askance-for it is known that the pagan will not hesitate one moment to inflict them on himself, if by so doing he can drive, conviction home to the heart of a "griffin" magistrate, and feed bis revenge on the man or men whom he has denounced. From the foregoing brief outline it will be gathered that the duties of a Stipendiary in Hongkong call for the exercise of many qualities, not the least of which are patience and ability to read faces. Taken all round, those qualities are not wanting, but there is room for considerable inprovement in the department, more especially in the selection of the subordinate stall, which at present, for insolence, ignorance, and inefficiency, rans some other sections of the Government very close indeed...

"The language of Flowers" as defined by an English contemporary in referting to a former metropolitan magistrate, "li forty shillings or a month." In Hongkong the stipendiaries follow a more clastic system, the punishments varying from $1 to $500, and from a day to a year. To Capital There are two "beaks"-neither of whom are overpaid and they usually run the penal rule over the ranks of the offenders on alternate days. There is what may be termed a sort of system about the character of cases tried at our model mation de justice, (this was written before Mr. Robinson retired.-Ed); Mr. Wodehouse usually takes the ones wherein sound common sense has to be concentrated on the matter under investigation, while Mr. E. Robinson deals with cases in which legal problems are more or less involved. The arrange- ment is not always advantageous, though it works fairly well on the whole; if horse-sense could be swapped for legal acumen on occasion, or vice versa, then the interests of the public st large would be decidedly benefited. The aver age number of cases daily is about thirty—more, perhaps, when the Captain Superintendent stirs the police up, and less during raing intervals when even the evil-doers take a holiday. If the overage is exceeded, of course both Magistrates "sit." The Court is (facetiously) -supposed to open at nine, for 9.30, but whether it does or not depends a good deal on the temperament of the sitting Magistrate or rather of his wife. Long experience has shewn that his Worship's advent may be expected about roam, on the average. The infinite variety that a Hongkong police-court presents renders it impossible to even approximately describe the usual routine; we must summarise it. In the long railed-off compartment in the centre of the court sit and stand the unwashed offenders, while in front facing the Bench, are the budding advocates, occasionally learned barristers, bard-July worked reporters, and so-called interpreters, On guard over the entrance gate stands Jim"the constable, with fiery visage and fierce moustache, regularly detailed for that special service-an officer whe breathes powerfully on his victims, and makes them glad to get off with anything short of life sentence or a thrashing. within an inch of their lives. Probably in no other court within British Jurisdiction are the charges against delinquents so varied. Tomake matters worse in the Queen's Bench Division, there have just been several abnormally long cases. Mr. Justice Kay may well be 'congratulated on the final result of the case Enoy. Dunn. After having his decision overrated by the Court o Appeal, there is much "balm in Gilead" is having confirmed by the House of Lords. The remarkable schism in judicial opinion brought about by the case will be memorable Mr. Justice Kay, Lord Justice Cotton, Lord. Herschell, Lord Watson, and Lord Macnaghten deciding on the one side that "Dunn's Fruit Salt Baking Fow- der" was an infilogement of the trade mark "Eno's Fruit Salt:" Lord Justice Lindley, Lord Justice Fry, the Lord Chancellor, and Lord Morris, on the other side, opining that it was not. In view of the result of the second trial, Mr. Cock's action in returning Miss Wiedemann's brief has been much discussed in the Temple. The opinion is freely expressed that Mr. Cock was not justified in withdrawing from the case by anything in the evidence given before.

Mr. Justice Mathew, only a counsel it is thought, who felt bound to always act upon his personal opinion of a case-which no code of professional ethics could require would have refused to conduct Miss Wiedemann's case. That being so, it is the more suprising that no the lady's cause. If cleverly conducted, so well rising young barrister was ready to champion case would have been the making advertised of his cateer. But perhaps Miss Wiedemann was aware of the attractiveness of her personal appearance, before Mr. Justice Mathew pointed it out at the beginning of his judgment, and really desired to try its loftuence upon the jury in the subtle way of which lady litigants are mistresses. Itis understood that when her case comes before another jury-she has already taken the necessary steps for another trial-she wül continue to appear in person.
